Multiple authors - how does Calibre decide the folder structure?

Mostly out of curiosity. I don't intend to go tampering around with the folder structure.

When fixing up the metadata of books in PDF format, when I add an extra author sometimes I have to close the file because Calibre wants to move the book to a new location. But sometimes it doesn't.

(Related: Does anyone know of a PDF viewer that doesn't lock the stupid files when they're open?)

Aside from messing about with custom columns, is there any way to set the 'main' author? I'd assume no

Try opening the PDF in a browser such as firefox or edge.

whichever author is first in the list is the main author.

Ok I figured that out now.

Thanks. Aside from manually re-typing, is there a way to rearrange authors?

EDIT: I found the "edit authors" (it's a little hidden in the context menu). It makes the author sort column turn red though until I fix it. Is that supposed to happen?

Just click the right arrow to auto-regenerate the author sort.
