The Case of the Mislabeled eBook

I recently got an ebook on Kindle Unlimited, but when I filtered for Kindle Unlimited books on my device, it didn't show up. It didn't show up in "All" either. However, when I turned off the "Books" filter, it showed up. With some experimenting, I discovered the book was listed as a comic for some reason. Can I change that on the Kindle? I don't see a way to do it.

Here's a follow-up.
I restarted the Kindle, but no change. On the managing content page in a web browser, the two ebooks show up as books. On the Kindle, they are listed as comics. I contacted custserv and had mixed results. The first rep didn't listen to me well and assumed it was a user issue. After a long pointless conversation, I requested escalation, and she disconnected the conversation. The second rep understood the problem instantly, asked for me to email photos of my Kindle's screen, and escalated the matter to the relevant department.

So it's a database error. However, I still would like to know if I could recategorize a comic as a book on the Kindle. I'm thinking, "No", but I thought I'd ask here just in case I was missing something.

You'd need to download it, change the internal type, and then side-load it onto your Kindle. You might also need to remove DRM - I can't remember whether the file kind is inside the encrypted portion or not.

Right. I assumed stripping DRM and fixing it through Calibre would fix it, but I was hoping for an on-device solution. It was a vain hope since I couldn’t see any way to do it, but I don’t know everything.

There is a sort of on-device solution. Make sue the metadata is correct. Then plug in your Reader. Select all of the eBooks that show as being on your Reader. Then update the metadata on the Reader.

Where do you change this in Calibre?

I've been having the same kind of problem for ages with sideloaded sci papers especially, but presumed it was unfixable.

In the Output options for MOBI there's a 'Personal Doc tag'. Change it to [EBOK] to make books converted to MOBI and then sideloaded appear as Books, not documents.

That won't work in this case since the book in question is showing up as a comic, not a personal document. Different metadata controls that categorization and if you change it I believe that will disable the special functionality the Kindle has for reading comics.

Thanks I'll give that a try. It didn't occur to me that it would be there, I only searched in "Edit metadata".

But why change the the settings for Mobi? Use KF8 instead.

Because, Jon, if you actually went and looked yourself, you'd see that that setting controls the option for old mobi, new mobi (KF8) and combined mobi.
