I have manually updated my PW3 and it is all OK.
There is some GUI change but nothing so spectacular or difficult to learn.
One thing I don't like is that margins choices are:
  • very large
  • too large
  • insanely large
Of course this is not peculiar of this firmware but I hoped that the situation could change.

I think I may have solved the problem. The doc folder is now empty. I then tried restarting the kindle and it is now working and is showing 5.13.2 firmware Fortunately I don't keep many books on my kindle.

Very large I find tolerable, if not ideal. The others are just plain nuts!

... by feeding it negative page margins, which kind of sucks, as workarounds go. But, hey, apparently, it works, at least for horizontal margins.

(Fair warning: I don't use Kindles anymore. So this is my vague memories of how this ended up being resolved. YMMV).

I don't remember if negative margins works also with KFX. And of course if You download directly from Amazon You can't change anything.

Anyway IMHO the last 2 great improvements of Kindle firmware are when they allowed custom fonts and when they introduced the possibility of increasing the sharpness of the font.

After that I have seen only cosmetic changes.

I don't recall either, since I only use .azw3. As it has been 11+ years and still no option to reduce the ridiculous margins, I am not optimistic. I'd rather have formatting I want over anything else. But that's just my preference (one of the reasons Kobos are my go-to ereaders).

I always set my margins to be as wide as I can on my Kindle. I'm more used to reading on my phone and the short text lines make it easier to go gracefully to the next line. I once read that that's why newspaper columns are narrow; that they enable readers to read faster and more easily.
