Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
Bored with their work, three Milanese book editors cook up an elaborate hoax that connects the medieval Knights Templar with occult groups across the centuries. Becoming obsessed with their own creation, they produce a map indicating the geographical point from which all the powers of the earth can be controlled—a point located in Paris, France, at Foucault’s Pendulum.

But in a fateful turn the joke becomes all too real. When occult groups, including Satanists, get wind of the Plan, they go so far as to kill one of the editors in their quest to gain control of the earth. Orchestrating these and other diverse characters into his multilayered semiotic adventure, Umberto Eco has created a superb cerebral entertainment.

A few random price drops as part of the Kindle US Daily Deal, all matched at Kobo.

Murphy's Law, first in the Molly Murphy series by Rhys Bowen, $2.99.
I've quite liked the titles that I've read in this series, although not quite as much as Bowen's Lady Georgie series. They are a little less cute, though, if you find Lady Georgie to be over-the-top cute.

Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/Murphys-Law...dp/B003G83U6O/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/murphy-s-law-7

Stone Cold, fouth in the Jesse Stone series by Robert B. Parker of Spenser fame, $2.99
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Stone-Cold-Je...dp/B005F4ATWA/
Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/Stone-Cold-...dp/B005F4ATWA/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/stone-cold-10

Many a Twist, sixth in the Maura Donovan/County Cork series by Sheila Connolly, another series I've enjoyed a few titles in, $1.99
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Many-Twist-Co...dp/B072LTRZXS/
Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/Many-Twist-...dp/B072LTRZXS/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/many-a-twist-2

The Deeds of the Disturber, fifth in the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters, $1.99 and coupon/VIPable at Kobo, awesome series IMO (and in the opinion of lots of others, I suspect), this one has been as low as $0.99 before, and not that long ago, so check carefully before you buy

The Brass Verdict is the second title in Michael Connelly's shorter, but probably as well known and awarded, Mickey Haller series. It is £0.99 today as part of the Kindle UK Daily Deal. Per SYKM, the first title in the series, The Lincoln Lawyer, won or was nominated for six awards (!) and this title itself won the 2009 Anthony Award for Best Mystery. And Harry Bosch is in this book too...enough that SYKM calls it the 14th in the Harry Bosch series as well.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002S0KB5E/
Kindle UK/Smile: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002S0KB5E/

Spoiler:
Quote:
A superb novel featuring both Mickey Haller and Harry Bosch from the No. 1 bestselling author of The Lincoln Lawyer and The Gods of Guilt.

Defence lawyer Mickey Haller has had some problems, but now he's put all that behind him and is ready to resume his career. Then another lawyer, Vincent, dies, and Haller gets an unexpected windfall: he inherits all Vincent's clients, putting his stalled career back on track at a stroke.

Not only that, but Vincent had taken on a high-profile and potentially lucrative murder case. It'll be a trial that promises big fees and an even bigger place in the media spotlight - and if Mickey can win against the odds, he'll really be back in the big leagues.

The only problem is the detective handling the case - a certain Harry Bosch - is convinced the killer must be one of Vincent's clients. Suddenly Mickey is faced with the biggest challenge of his career: how to defend a client successfully who might just be planning to murder him.

The Law of Lines by Hye-young Pyun is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
The Law of Lines follows the parallel stories of two young women whose lives are upended by sudden loss. When Se-oh, a recluse still living with her father, returns from an errand to find their house in flames, wrecked by a gas explosion, she is forced back into the world she had tried to escape. The detective investigating the incident tells her that her father caused the explosion to kill himself because of overwhelming debt she knew nothing about, but Se-oh suspects foul play by an aggressive debt collector and sets out on her own investigation, seeking vengeance.

Ki-jeong, a beleaguered high school teacher, receives a phone call from the police saying that the body of her younger half-sister has just been found. Her sister was a college student she had grown distant from. Though her death, by drowning, is considered a suicide by the police, that doesn't satisfy Ki-jeong, and she goes to her sister's university to find out what happened. Her sister's cell phone reveals a thicket of lies and links to a company that lures students into a virtual pyramid scheme, preying on them and their relationships. One of the contacts in the call log is Se-oh.

Like Hye-young Pyun's Shirley Jackson Award–winning novel The Hole, The Law of Lines an immersive thriller that explores the edges of criminality in ordinary lives, the unseen forces that shape us, and grief and debt.

Spoiler:
Quote:
A series of baffling murders among a group of imprisoned agents threatens the outcome of World War II in this chilling mystery from the New York Times bestselling author of Mr. Churchill’s Secretary.

November, 1942. World War II is raging, and former spy Maggie Hope knows too much: what the British government is willing to do to keep its secrets, who is lying, who the double-crossers are. She knows exactly who is sending agents to their deaths. These are the reasons Maggie is isolated on a remote Scottish island, in a prison known as Killoch Castle. When one of her fellow inmates drops dead in the middle of his after-dinner drink—he’s only the first. As victims fall one by one, Maggie will have to call upon all her wits and skills to escape—not just certain death . . . but certain murder. For what’s the most important thing that Maggie Hope knows? She must survive.

^ These are fantastic reads. Remember, however, that they were written during a time when pc was just a pimple on someone's a**.

I love these books and read many of them when I was just a kid.

(Kobo.uk also has them.)

In case anyone does not know. This is the first book in the series. About his war years.

It is written by Keith Wease. Self published. I have read it and enjoyed it very much.

Some titles from the Kindle UK monthly sale for August, ending in a few days. Mostly titles to my taste, and a few other authors I recognize. All at £0.99 each unless otherwise indicated. Lots of repeats. I’m not going to give the Smile links – if you want to make a Smile link, replace the “www” in the URL with “smile”.

The Son, by Jo Nesbo, non-series: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Son-Jo-Nesb...dp/B00GO9BMZS/

Headhunters, another non-series title by Jo Nesbo: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Headhunters...dp/B005EWDA2E/

The Daughter Of Time, by Josephine Tey, fourth in her Alan Grant series, my favorite of her books, since I’m a Ricardian too, but a good read even if you’re not: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Daughter-Ti...dp/B0050OM3OC/

The Lincoln Lawyer, by Michael Connelly, Mickey Haller #1, per SYKM this won/was nominated for an insane number of awards: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lincoln-Law...dp/B00374720W/

The Colours of all the Cattle, fairly recent (2018) in the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith, not really to my taste, but definitely to the taste of lots of people: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Colours-Cat...dp/B07BFCNLWF/

The Penguin Complete Sherlock Holmes, by Arthur Conan Doyle, public domain probably everywhere, but if you want a nice version this would probably do it inexpensively, but so would the MR versions (free): https://www.amazon.co.uk/Penguin-Com...dp/B003FXCS8G/

The Maltese Falcon, by Dashiell Hammett, a classic, public domain in Canada/similar and available from Faded Page if you are lucky enough to live/visit, otherwise this is a great deal: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Maltese-Fal...dp/B00N20V112/

The Lighthouse, Inspector Dalgliesh #13, by P. D. James: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lighthouse-...dp/B002RI90G8/

Red Mist, Kay Scarpetta #19, by Patricia Cornwell: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Red-Mist-Sc...dp/B005LN0DBW/

The Bone Bed, Kay Scarpetta #20, by Patricia Cornwell: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bone-Bed-Sc...dp/B008S4FZHI/

Rupture, fourth in the Dark Iceland series by Ragnar Jónasson: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rupture-Dar...dp/B01NCZRGFA/

continued….
