Except that's not the right fb state (On the Libra & Forma, for sure, quite possibly on a host of other Mk. 7 devices, too), so it'll (not so) subtly break anything that doesn't correct that themselves (which, okay, Nickel, KOReader & Plato do).

@NiLuJe would you mind telling us the official status of KSM09? Does it work? If it does, what situations does it work? If it doesn't work, how doesn't it work and would you have to maybe factory reset?

I'm not the maintainer ;p.

I just know that handling this properly is a bit of a nightmare without having the devices and/or proper feedback. @tshering tried (c.f., the "rotation test" thread thingy). One guy (sorry, can't remember the username) tried to consolidate the Mk. 7 stuff by moving all the individual patches to GH, but that didn't really go anywhere either.

If you still would like to restore KSM try the following (I am not certain whether this procedure is sound. I did not really follow the developments of the last months. Or years?)

Step 1:
Prevent that nickel will again reads files from dot folders into the database, by inserting the change described here
and at the same time (don't disconnect the device from the pc in between) rename the folder .adds to .addsx. Now disconnect the device. The expected result is that nickel removes appbar.align.right.png etc. from the database
Step 2: rename .addsx back to .adds and copy KBStartMenu_09_restore.zip (you can find it in the first post) to .kobo

For those of us who do not need the most recent Kobo firmware, KSM still offers a number of advantages. Not the least of which is not having Nickel running in order to launch other programs. KSM's USB support is also a handy feature.

Because it just works great, if you have device(s) that are supported.

I'm still with KSM and it works great for me.

It's not hate. It's to stop people who are running too late a firmware version or have not the technical knowledge to run KSM. I do not want to have others have to factory reset their Kobo because they listened to those like your who say it works.

The developer says to not use KSM in the first post of this thread. So why not just help others and let it go. Stop saying it works all over the place. Just go with the advice to use KFMon and NickelMenu. It's safer for everyone.

If you have an old enough firmware, sure KSM will work. But when you have the current firmware, stay away from KSM.

You seem to be insisting that people who can and do still use KSM should stop doing so. There is no risk that the software, running well on your existing device, well "cause your Kobo to get bricked". As long as I have and keep a device I will try to keep it functioning with the software that does what I want it to. When I get new devices, with different software requirements, I will obviously be using some different software.

Fortunately, my favorite ereading software, KOReader, runs on many devices and is constantly being updated/improved. So, I have no need for Kobo firmware "updates", to enjoy an ever improving reading experience. (I also get the benefit of having a common user interface while reading, over a number of devices, new and old.)

So, I see no reason to "give it up" and for me at least KSM is in no way Dead on my Kobo devices.

Notwithstanding your other comments, it is a bit unnecessary to say it's dead. That's more of a (overly strong) opinion than a fact.

Edit: To clarify, I'm not saying KSM isn't more risky than alternatives (it's an inherent part of the way it works compared to KFMon and NickelMenu), nor am I saying it works correctly on newer devices/versions (especially kobo7 or 15505+). I'm saying that there isn't a need to state that opinion strongly whenever someone posts about it wherever you can, especially when the person already uses it and it isn't answering the original question.

Well, as you put it with your own words, the developer said so in the very first post of thread, so, why you have that pathological need to chime in every little while and again tell people not to use it?

You think people can't read?

You think, that you'll help people who don't read instructions (i.e. what is contained in first post) with avoiding factory reset? Well, you won't, as they don't read instructions, if they missed what developer had to say about KSM in the first post!!!

So, all you say is just your need to, for some reason, try to spread hate about KSM and developer, who informed everyone about what he had to say about KSM.

And yes, KSM still works great, just fine on devices that used it before. On my all devices it works without any problems. I still use it and I will use it as long as I will have my devices in working order.

You can continue your "(un)holly war" for whatever reasons, but people who still want to use KSM because it works great on their devices, they will use it. And no, I don't need your advice on what should I do and why.

I’m glad JSWOLF is keeping this thread alive and current so people who are new can see it and try KSM.

I find it ironic that Jon is leading such a war against KSM when there’s evidence he doesn’t even keep his devices as up to date as they could be. Allowing his device to possibly have security risks and or potentially serious issues. No instead he waits not only for patches but beyond. It’s a miracle his kobo hasn’t exploded yet.

I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying to not say it's OK to use KSM. It's not OK. If it works for you, that's good. But at some point it became unsafe to use it and we don't know when that is. So it's easier to just say not to use it.
