I liked the movie Crazy Rich Asians much better than the book, which I found annoying. I read the book first and wouldn't have bothered with the movie except that my son wanted to take me to it.

Plan 9 From Outer Space. The Film is much better than the screenplay (or the book). https://www.amazon.com/Plan-Outer-Sp.../dp/0615803148 Last edited by Dr. Drib; 08-25-2020 at 01:50 PM. |

Logan's Run. The movie is no masterpiece, but then neither is the book. And the movie is more focused. The book is episodic and at times very silly. Make Room! Make Room! The movie (Soylent Green) is much more memorable. I've read Make Room! Make Room! and don't remember anything about it. Four to consider (though I haven't read the original books yet, so cannot confirm):

Here in the US we had or have these booklets or pamphlets, Cliff's Notes, that students can use for an English class when they haven't read or finished the book; it gives a summary of the plot, character descriptions, etc. To me that's what a movie typically is, a Cliff's Notes version of the book since so much has to be left out in order for it to fit within 2 hours or whatever. Therefore a movie is very unlikely to cover all of the stuff that the book does, giving us instead the most interesting stuff. In that regard I'd say that big "tome" books are good candidates. For example, Lord of the Rings was an enjoyable series of movies. And although I'm not a fan of the Harry Potter books, the movies were reasonably entertaining, although I didn't see the final one or two. Last edited by hobnail; 08-25-2020 at 02:00 PM. |

I liked LOR. I could not even get thru the first book. Princess Bride? In some cases, The Movie tied with the book, but in most case: FAIL (too much Hollywood- fakeness or excesses Note I mainly watch Science Fiction |

Soylent Green got me thinking of Charlton Heston, which brings to mind: The Omega Man The 10 Commandments For me it is hard to say that one is better then the other; movies and books are different, to me. For me, I've seen a lot of poor movies, by I haven't read a lot of poor books. |

There is an Estonian adventure movie that's much, much better than the original novel it's based on (which was written in 1893), but I doubt anyone here knows either the book or the movie, unless they're Estonians. The movie (Viimne reliikvia - The Last Relic) has practically iconical status in my country. Most Estonians can quote it in their sleep. |

After I rediscovered ebooks and upgraded my ereader I looked at my library's collection and they have a lot. Checked out the first one of LOTR and yup, it's a slog and I didn't finish it. And that would have been the 3rd time I'd have read it. I'm clearly getting fussy in my old age. As good as or better than the movie is the audio book version done by the BBC where they have actors playing the characters, like the old radio dramas. |
