I think you mean the slider bar that pops up, not the table of contents. On the slider bar, it shows pages for the whole book.

But again, with the header and footer information, the pages on the slider bar don't matter. If I were reading one of those massive Delphi collections, I would be more likely to use the table of contents to jump to a book than the slider. And at that point, I'm not sure page number matters anyway, does it?
the slider bar in the table of contents is exactly what i meant. does it matter? in a way yes especially when it's always been like that in my experience, obviously it's subjective/each to their own.

personally the go to page number being taken away in favour of the scrollbar
matters to me the most, why? because it's always worked that way for me over the last 5 years.

trying to warm to the latest firmware isn't made easy when features/option i'm use to disappear.

To be fair, it worked that way because you are using outdated firmware. Not because Kobo just changed it.

But as I asked earlier, how useful is 'go to page xxx' in one of those omnibus books? I'd still think you're better off using the table of contents. It's not like you can say "Great Expectations starts on page 3,527, and if I want to go to chapter two, I need page 3,549." Just use the table of contents.

And the table of contents is now indented, making it more useful in one of those omnibi.

I can empathize, but since moving on from the old firmware, my Kobo is faster and more stable than it used to be. That's been the case for a while, which is why when I lost the tiles, I shed a few tears, but never moved back. Searching collections used to freeze the reader for half a minute. Now? No lag at all.

And collections and series have their own separate tabs, which is much better than the old way.

fair play to you. searching collections is extremely slow on my original Aura running 3.16.0, but i get around that quite easily by having the one's i use the most on the old tiled home screen.

ultimately it depends which features we as users value the most. i have the latest firmware on my touch an will continue to update it as and when a new version is released.

you may have noticed i'm rarely quiet about the changes i don't like/desire, that being said one of the main things i do like that Kobo do very well is make it relatively easy with a little bit of care and attention to manually upgrade/downgrade the firmware.

The reason searing is slow is because you are using obsolete firmware. Things have been improved and you don't have any of these improvements. You have old software that doesn't work nearly as well as the current.

That freezing issue I had sorted itself out and stopped happening. Probably just gremlins again.

I'm not sure if it's just me, but the scrollbar on the book view list seems a little bit wider now. It's easier to tap without accidentally opening a book.

Trust me, it is obsolete. The firmware before 4.x (3.19.5761) is what should be run. It's the the best 3.x version.

In theory, that sounds fine, and on a tablet I would prefer it.
In practice, the accuracy on my KA1 touch screen is pretty poor, which combined with slow eInk refresh could lead to this being an exercise in frustration.
With clicking on a page number I can correct any typing errors and make sure the page number is correct before going to it.

You see it whenever you touch the scrollbar. But yeah I'd like it to show all the time.

on second thoughts 35 pages of collections wasn't the best example to use. i have 931 pages of books. for me it's much easier to go directly to let's say page 467 by using the go to page number feature. bottom line=i like familiarity.

Just to let you know, it's based on experience. If I was to run a version 3 firmware, it would be the last version 3.19 firmware.

If I am correct, there were patches to disable sickel or increase the timeout. Either way, I've never had sickel cause a reboot.
