I think he should send back a strictly polite (no niceties) answer to the boss, pointing out that this was outside of business hours, and he need not have answered at all. And that he will not answer in future, due to this encounter.

I believe that is what his email reply said.

My 30+ year old sewing machine can't be fixed. I'm heartbroken.

We have a great repair place about 15 miles from here. They told me when I dropped it off if it needed parts, they may be out of luck because you can't get them anymore. It's an old Singer Quantum. It was a real workhorse, and gave its all making almost 500 masks from April-June of this year.

We thought it was just the timing that needed adjustment, along with a cleaning and oiling. But there are broken bits, and the motor itself has a weird "whine". It works, but badly.

Silly to get so upset about a sewing machine. What is wrong with me?

I'm so sorry! I don't even sew often but if my older than that sewing machine broke I'd be heartbroken. It was mom's when she first got married, and it was handed down to me. I want to say she got it in the early 50s? I wish you luck finding another good machine!

We had tried to keep my mother's machine and my wife's grandmothers machine working. We had them repaired several times over the last 10 years. The repairs never held long. It took years to let them go, but finally we sold them cheap to someone who wanted to mess with trying to fix them, and we bought a new Husqvarna. I don't know if it'll last to become an heirloom, but it's such a comparative pleasure to use, my wife is happily sewing her little heart out on it, far more than she sewed with either of the "sentimental" machines. We have face masks for days, as the kids say.

I have an appointment to look at their new and pre-owned machines tomorrow.

I'll probably get a Janome or Babylock. This store has good deals and warranties on their pre-owned machines also. They carry very high-end machines also, it's fun to see the demos on the long arm quilting machines.

We also have a little Janome "Hello Kitty" machine from Target that she got to teach our daughter (um...and me) how to sew. It was dirt cheap and it works great. Until we got the new machine and got rid of the old ones, if she had to sew, she'd usually fight with one of the sentimental machines for a little while, get frustrated, then pull out the Hello Kitty.

Enjoy whichever one you get!

Can the shop look for a secondhand machine of the same model? Either to replace your machine or to use for parts?

I had to get repair parts for an old Hoover vacuum. The guy at the repair shop told me they'd stopped making parts, but he pulled out a cardboard box of parts that had been salvaged from old machines and found exactly what I needed.

I did look on eBay and Etsy for grins and giggles. I couldn't find any exact matches. The motor itself has a problem, which just isn't fixable, or not worth the time/trouble to try. The guy said he worked on it for 4 hours, and just couldn't fix it. It sews, but poorly. I'm hoping maybe he will offer me a little something towards a new machine. He isn't charging me anything.

The machine must have been one of the last non-computerized Quantums that Singer made. That combined with the fact that Singer at some point filed bankruptcy, and factories that made parts closed down.

This repair place is THE best sewing machine shop in northeast Ohio. He knows what he's talking about...I bought the machine there 30+ years ago, he said it was the last Singer model they sold. He doesn't sell them at all now. I don't think he even likes to take the newer Singers in for repair.

I felt the same when they told me that they couldn't fix my old Kenmore back in 1999. It was my high school graduation present. A family member used it without permission when I wasn't at home. I'd had that machine for more than 20 years, sewing nearly daily with no problem. She jammed up the tension and it was unfixable due to lack of parts. So I understand your sadness. I since bought a Brother (selling now) and then a Bernina. Very happy with computerized machine. Thankfully had the Brother as I made more than 100 masks on it while my Bernina was in the shop. I broke a needle and thought the tip had flown onto the floor somewhere up until it jammed my machine. Took 3 weeks to get it back because by then, everybody was making masks and bringing machines in for repair.

Ordered the Brother PS500 today. Supply lines are struggling, which wasn't unexpected, so the mid-line machines have been tough to keep in stock.

I went in expecting to buy the Baby Lock Presto 2, turns out Brother makes Baby Lock, and the one I ordered is basically the same machine, with a better warranty.

They gave me a bit off for the broken Singer, and it will be recycled. They don't use older used parts for repair, he said they stopped doing that years ago.

A bit more than I wanted to spend, but the base model machines would not have been a good choice for me. I can't wait to get my hands on it...I've been wanting to make some placemats, which will be a good first project to learn the machine.

On a rant...went to watch our oldest grandson play baseball this morning, and something stung my left ring finger right by my wedding ring. Never saw what it was, but man did it hurt. Immediately took my rings off, which was good because it started to swell. My whole finger hurts still, and looks bruised. It didn't get too puffy, but aches, and is starting to itch.

The team won the first game, lost the second. The differences in the sizes of the kids is amazing.

Minor thing, but irritating; I had a letter telling me my eye test was due. I rang up and booked an appointment, which was 9.25 on the day, but they asked me to arrive at 9.10. The day before the test, I got a courtesy phone call asking me to arrive at 9.10. I agreed.
On the day I arrived at 9.08, having walked slightly faster than I intended maybe? I was met at the door of the Opticians by a large security type female, who very aggressively asked what I wanted. I explained my appointment, and that I was here, as requested at 9.10. It was actually 9.09 at this point.
Quite nastily, she said that I was 'too early' and I needed to walk around for 'about ten minutes' before returning. I did so, but was quietly fuming.
On my return, no sign of aggressive lady troll, and everyone was as nice as could be. Maybe she was having 'one of those days'?

So, got the phone call my new sewing machine was in. Turns out hubby called them and upgraded the order to the next model. More features, an accessory bundle that includes a removable wider quilting table, more specialized presser feet, more built in stitches, and a presser foot knee lifter.

Wow is this machine intimidating.
