Moving the "TOC tab" to the Right Panel -- Suggestion for the next version of Sigil?
Hi All!
I have a suggestion for the next version of Sigil as titled. The purpose of Moving the "TOC tab" from the left panel to the right panel is to improve the efficiency of TOC operations. The following are the proposed steps in achieving this purpose: Step#1: Moving the "TOC Tab" to the Right Panel as shown in fig.01 (pls. see attached file) which means that there will be 2 tabs on the left-panel: -- the "TOC Tab" -- &the "Book Browser Tab" Step#2: set "Ctrl+Shift+T" as the default shortcut key to run the "TOC Edit" screen, which means the default "sigil.ini" file will be updated with: 9\id=MainWindow.EditTOC 9\keySequence=Ctrl+Shift+T Step#3: Simplify the "TOC Edit" screen to the screen as shown in fig.03 which contains only the "add new", "delete",...etc, buttons, as the "TOC" has already been there in the left-panel and seems a duplication if it is not removed in the "TOC Edit" Screen. The simplified "TOC Edit" screen is sugguested to be embedded in the "Middle-Panel", because you seldom edit the page while you edit the TOC, -> provided that Step#4 has been completed. Step#4: Automatically add a "new blank HTML file" to the "Text Container" when a new TOC title is created due to an "add new" action as operated in Step#3 -> the name of the new HTML file will be "s001.xhtml" for simplicity (was "Section0001.xhtml"); and will be remained unchanged if the user later changes the TOC title starting with non-english character,e.g "海洋生物" -> the name of the new HTML file will be renamed to, e.g "Introduction.xhtml", if the new TOC title is then renamed to the title "Introduction" with all the characters in English; -> the name of the new HTML file will be renamed to, e.g "Human_Body_001.xhtml", if the new TOC title is then renamed to a title ended with non-english characters, e.g "Human Body 人體". Hope the Developers will consider this suggestion for the next version of Sigil! Thanks for any kinds of help! |

Step #1: Move it yourself. It's a dockable widget. Move it to another dock area. Stack it/tab it with another. Go crazy. They're all yours to adjust however you want. They'll stay where you put them from instance to instance--through uninstalls and updates. And you're talking about the Book Browser, by the way. The TOC widget is already on the right by default (and in your picture). It's Book Browser that defaults to the left on new installs. The names of the widgets are in their titlebars. Using them correctly will go a long way toward being able to better help you in the future.
Step #2 is a no for me. There's no need to change a default shortcut when you can change it to whatever you want and have it stay that way (through uninstalls/updates). The defaults are for new installations only. As far as #3 goes. The "middle panel" is the central widget. The only thing that will ever occupy that space is Code View. It is the central widget. Everything else will either be a dock widget or a separate dialog. It's not possible to "embed" the TOC editor (or any other widget/dialog in the central panel). Step #4 is a "no" for me as well, I'm afraid. The ability to create new blank files already exists in the Book Browser context menu where it belongs. The editing of a TOC is not the place for new file creation, IMO. Last edited by DiapDealer; 08-20-2020 at 09:10 AM. |

Drag and Drop. Perhaps Reading Sigil's User Manual (it still needs to be updated by will help with all the primary features).

Grab the title bar and drag it. Like you move anything else in a gui environment.

No prob. But remember... it's the "Book Browser" you moved from the left to the right. You keep confusing Book Browser with TOC.

Yes, the OP does not seem to understand Sigil's structure at all. They seem to want to merge BookBrowser and Edit ToC into some single functional unit without even trying to understand how our current interface works and what any major change like that would do to long term users. And just to make it match someone else's software!
I am now about done with all of this. |

I even Stack Book Browser and TOC as I only use one at a time. Also note that my toolbars are on the right, so I don't need to cross over the entire document. (I park my mouse to the right of the working window.)

The image looks more as if he is using the right side not the left side. Since it just a matter of dragging and dropping, not a big deal. As for generating the ToC, my vote is for using h tags with titles if needed.
