One un-benefit of calibre plugin generated KFX is that it can only make a single large file instead of the multiple files generated by amazon. That would be a handling benefit for you, but kindles might have trouble with the large file.

KFX supports Kerning, hyphenation and ligatures. And the 9 pages preview works only with KFX.

With AZW3 You can only have soft hypens if You create them with calibre but if there are notes the pop up notes will not have dashes.

The drawback is that files are larger than the file You could buy from Amazon for the same book because are not compressed, but I have never had any trouble with them. And if You are a Linux user the plugin doesn't support Linux because it relies on Kindle previewer that does not exist for Linux. Finally if You like the font ramp hack it is not supported by KFX.

So KFX is out for me as I use Ubuntu.

Tried to install X ray plugins and it gave errors, is that also a windows only plugin?

The DeDrm doesn't like calibre 4.99.4 I have noticed.

Should I update the firmware? Noticed posts saying if you upgrade firmware you can jailbreak, but also found post saying you can't with a pw4.

Tried the night mode and the screen freaked out took me half a hour before I could use it again as I had to guess where things where, so current firmware has a bug or 2.

The PW4 is a special case. See this post:

You really need to STOP using that awful repository Linux foists on users. They have no clue how to handle Calibre. Go download the 4.22 version (unless 4.23 is out) and install that from Calibre's official website. The problem is that the DeDRM plugin is Python 2 code and 4.99.4 is a Python 3 beta (may not be the latest beta).

Please never again use the repository (POS) when it comes to installing anything to do with Calibre.

You need to learn the difference between a linux distribution and linux itself.

linux does not foist any repository on anybody.

The various linux distributions repositories have different calibre versions (although I'm sure none of them meet your arbitrary standards).

And you need to STOP ordering people around.

@Gandulf is unable to use the DeDRM plugin because the repository has the wrong version of Calibre. He needs the current non-beta version, not one of the beta versions.

I've read of plenty of issues caused by botched Calibre repositories. So the solution to Calibre is not to use any repository for anything released to Calibre and just get it from the official Calibre website.

There is no excuse for your sloppy, incorrect, and confusing terminology.

ubuntu != linux

Get your terminology straight.

The fact that some versions of some distributions does not merit a blanket ban on ever using any repository from any distribution to get calibre.

How would someone know that the Calibre they have is the correct version or built properly even if it is the correct version?

Thanks didn't mean to stirred up a hornet's nest.

Redid my pc to latest ubuntu, so don't even know if older version on calibre works with ubuntu 20.04. 1

My pw4 has a newer firmware than the 1 required in the post, will message and see.

KFX plugin seems a windows only 1.

Apologies for what seems silly questions, but I think I will just do the firmware update, this is my only eink device, and don't want to risk stuffing it up just so that maybe I can change a few things.
Happy with it, my eyes thank me and (to me) it's rather amazing to be able to read outside.

I will get used to the margins and line spacing soon enough.

The only Linux distribution that I have found to keep an up to date non-beta calibre in their repository is Arch and it's derivatives.

Of the 7 Linux distributions I run on my laptop, 3 have calibre 4.22 (Arch and Manjaro and OpenSUSE Tumbleweed), 3 have calibre's python 3 betas available, 2 have calibre 3.3.1 or earlier. The last distribution is Photon 3.0 which doesn't offer calibre or a GUI though it's Docker and Kubernetes support is great.

And yes, I know that is more than 7 since a couple of repositories have old calibre python 2 installs and a beta calibre python 3 install.

Premise: of course when You buy from Amazon You receive trough Wi Fii the KFX if the book is enabled for "better typography" but if You download from the site You receive AZW3 or sometimes Mobi.

I use Ubuntu 20.04 and I downloaded calibre (actually 4.22) from the official site because this is the advice of Kovid Goyal, the creator of calibre. It works perfectly. I have never tried the distribution version so I have no experience with that.

I also have a Windows 10 dual boot that I use only for KFX plugin, ADE and Kobo Desktop. So my calibre in Linux handles my Kobo and my Pocketbook, my calibre in Windows 10 handles my Kindle.

When I bought my PC there was Windows 10 and I decided to not get rid of it, I said myself: "may be it could be useful for some strange reason", but I did not know yet that I would then buy my Ereaders and that I would need it especially for some programs that does not exist for Linux.

Of course You could use Wine: a person in the forum said that he was able to install Kindle Previewer with Wine, he is the only case I know, but the plugin doesn't work with Linux anyway.

You could try to use the Windows version of calibre with Wine and try to use the KFX plugin? It seems crazy and so difficult to convince calibre and the plugin to work. In my opinion after all it's not worth it but if you want to have fun...

ps: ADE is a strange beast: if You search You can see success in using it with Wine, while in this forum there are Linux user that reported a fail.

Edit: 4.99 is a beta version and, as far as I know, the DeDRM plugin doesn't work with it.

The repositories for Linux Mint (one example, what I use) are way out of date. Linux Mint 19.3 has Calibre 3.21 in its repository. The current version of Calibre is 4.22. Huge difference.

Calibre is one of the few applications I don't use the repository for installing. I would go to...

https://calibre-ebook.com/download_linux

...and just follow the instructions for installation.

It's just copy and paste into the terminal and run the command(s). You should only have to run the first command if your libraries are new enough. If not you'll have to run one of the other commands. (but only once).
