I didn't realize there were 10 books in the Laundry Files now. I've only read the first two (and the three short stories from Tor.com) but I enjoyed them. Not as much as the Peter Grant books, but they were entertaining.

The word Steampunk perked up my attention. I keep trying to find more that doesn't sound too juvenile.

It took me a while to figure out what the steampunk genre is. The few that I've read seem to be rather boneheaded with respect to logic and technical stuff. My favorite dopey one was a post apocalyptic story where they had humanoid robots from the pre-apocalyptic days which they only vaguely understood how to use. The robots had steam occasionally escaping from their joints and whatnot. Rather a bit too literal on the steam part of steampunk I guess.

Steampunk is a popular sub-genre of science fiction. And Science Fiction has its roots in Fantasy. Smugglepunk I know nothing about. Perhaps it has to do with steam-powered biplanes smuggling contraband. Or a Rube Goldberg machine, such as a domino-powered dynamo, one that that to be perpetually re-set in order to keep working.

I think that's why such a descriptor turns me off. Harry Harrison's 'A Transatlantic Tunnel, Hurrah!', Stephen Baxter's 'Anti Ice' and K.W. Jeter's 'Infernal Devices' were all fun thought experiments on science fiction tropes in Victorian times.

But lots of what is labelled as steampunk now is just a shallow esthetic choice. Not that it all is. But still...
