Irritated with Kobo

I was too lazy to go get my cable and wanted to transfer a book from calibre to my clara hd, so I decided to use the calibre content server. To do that, I had to turn my wireless on for the first time in weeks... Before I could get the browser up and to the correct library, my clara reboots and installs an update!
While it was rebooting I went and got my cable.
If that's not bad enough, now calibre is complaining the database version is unsupported.
I'm sure this will be fixed with the next release of Calibre (which should be tomorrow ) but I sure wish that it would at least tell you they it is going to reboot, or even better give you the option to delay for a while....

No need to wait for a calibre update. Just follow the instructions in the message that gets displayed.

As has been said many times, if the time ever comes that the database is truly of incompatible it will be pasted all over this forum.

While it'd be silly IMO to patch for just this and nothing else, there is a patch to make it ask before installing an update.

I wonder... Would creating a directory called KoboRoot.tgz in .kobo prevent updates?

There's a checkbox in the kobo driver (Configure this device) to turn off that message. I think it's the Advanced options, "Attempt to support newer firmware." I enabled it long ago and have left it on.

There's also the fact that Calibre has no connection to Kobo, and Kobo doesn't controll what Calibre does. Best Kobo could do to negatively impact Calibre would be limit or restrict access to the user partition.

It is amazing how much better I felt, after I got to complain about it.
Really though, it is the rebooting without a warning that irritates me the most...

Apps and software get updated. It's not difficult to keep up with those updates and update or not.

People complain about Kobo but this is not a Kobo issue. It's something outside of Kobo or doing something outside the Kobo system. Dragged down a rabbit hole by Kobo topics like this thinking it's related to Kobo usage but it's not related to standard Kobo usage.

Reading the first post, and then the OP's followup post, I'm under the impression that it was mainly complaining about Kobo's auto update, not so much about Calibre.

To be fair most apps are and devices ask before installing updates. Well I suppose one could make an argument for Windows since it does occasionally ignore what the user tells it. But for the most part we control when an update gets installed.

However you’re quite right about Calibre not being officially supported by Kobo it’s more Kobo doesn’t get in Calibres way. How intentional this is is up to speculation but as BN and Amazon limit user control more than Kobo I’m guessing they’re intentionally leaving it open.

However even then the developers who work on Calibre and its plugins don’t know when Kobo is going to release updates and it would be irresponsible of them to allow firmware beyond the current one to be used without at least warning the user.

Simple. Enable a patch:

Always show confirmation dialog before upgrading:
  - Enabled: yes
  - PatchGroup: Firmware upgrade options
  - Description: This patch makes the confirmation dialog always show before upgrading.
