Yes, the tiles were all different sizes and moved around in faintly annoying ways and sometimes it was hard to keep the tiles you wanted on the screen.

The tabs / bottom bar icons are much better.

But now I can only see the last 4 books I started reading instead of the last 10.
I mean, it's horrible, how are us ADHD people suppose to find all our books so we can not finish more of them at once? :-P

Ah yes I can see the next complaint of Kobo's UI/UX now, "I can't open 5 books at once"

You can always try "My Books" (or series and collections) and use Cover View. You'll get 8 that way and can control how they're displayed much more easily than the tiles from the old home screen. Sure it's not 10 books, but I'd give up 2 for the sake of cleaner UI, and the ease of sorting them.

Question: I see you have a Kobo Forma. In "My Books", can you use the physical page-turn buttons to scroll through the list of books one page at a time?
The Aura ONE has no physical buttons, and the only way to turn pages is by swiping or tapping on the right side of the screen - which is where the scroll bar is. So you end up clicking on the scroll bar and accidentally jumping to a place in the book list you don't want to be in, or else tapping on (i.e. opening) a book that you didn't want to open. For actual scrolling, i.e. dragging the scroll bar, the touch screen isn't responsive enough; it either doesn't respond at all or jump several pages at a time.

Yes the page turn buttons can navigate through the lists in My Books. Though I find the screen is responsive enough to navigate them. I’d imagine if you use cover view the slight extra space between the books and the scroll bar might help.

Yes the page-turn buttons scroll one page at a time in the Book list, forward or backward.

You can swipe up and down in the Book list if you want to avoid the slider on the right edge. You still need a delicate touch to avoid opening a book accidentally.

Alternatively, if you press on the slider "handle" and slightly roll your finger up or down (rather than tapping/swiping) you'll have a bit more control.

I have a KA1 and it works for me. The pop-up 'Page x of y' box indicates that I'm advancing one page at a time.

Huh, that would explain why they set it up that way - it's basically built for the newest model and leaves the older ones behind. Well, it makes me somewhat more favourably inclined towards the Forma...

You're right, I just tried "My Books" in cover view, and it's somewhat better (still liable to jump to the middle of the list, but at least I can avoid accidentally opening books). Except cover view doesn't work great for me with all my sideloaded books/documents without proper covers. Ah well.

Thanks for the help!

I think I"m too clumsy for that... I keep opening books I don't want.

Now that's a great idea, and it works! Thank you!

I updated a Kobo Aura 2 just now. It downloads the update, starts installing and of course it starts updating and restarts the Aura.
I get the 3 dots moving, circular 2 arrows on screen, led is on and blinking. It takes a while seems to do noting, all 3 dots are black. Then after a few minutes, the first dot turns white, other 2 stay black. Nothing seems to happen and all of a sudden the screen flashes black and white twice and then nothing.
Device is swithed off completely since cpu gets cold.
Power on results in only the led turning on, screen blinks black and white twice led goes off and nothing.

I was in luck, I replaced the SD card just a month ago for a bigger one. I made an initial backup which I stored on my laptop.
After writing the SD card with the image file the Aura 2 works again, until it starts the update so for now I disabled autmatic updates and swhitched off the Wifi and it's still working.
Same happens with the original and other SD cards. Must be a bad update of someting?
Anyone had the same problem?

Our Kobo Clara had no problem at all, I like the new startpage.

I also fail to see how getting to your books is remotely difficult in the current UI. Going to ‘My Books’ puts you back in the view you were last in, and gives you very clear options for navigating to your book.
I loved the tiles because the home screen tailored itself to you making it quick and easy to get to the things you most often accessed, plus it showed more than four items, and nore than just your books.

As for finding books, as I said, the tab bar is a nice step in the right direction, but it still lacks the usability of the classic version.

That is BS and YOU know it. The "Syncing and updates" page of the setting has an option to turn the "daily Automatic Sync" off. This has nothing to do with other syncing done. We have had this discussion before. The settings page is clear about what it does, especially when you actually pay attention to the behaviour of the device when you change the options.

You get an update download if you didn't want one. Without knowing! (a) You can forget the WiFi is now on, or (b) it's slow and fiddly to turn off.

Then later the screen goes blank in the middle of reading as it updates.

The workaround is to ONLY open a book from the collections screen, not Home, then when you leave book (and you CAN'T go direct to Home because the GUI is brain dead) you are back at collections. It never syncs there, so you can turn off the WiFi.
WHY no Main Menu icon and WiFi icon when you bring up menu bar in reading?
Probably because they have feedback that the menu was cluttered and confusing or something like that.

Have you tried Marcial Lafuente Estefanía?

I wish that was true. No, it didn't give most frequently accessed things. It gave most recently accessed things. The difference may be subtle, but it means that things I accessed once just now pushed things that I accessed hundreds of times in the last week off the end of the screen.

It certainly would be interesting to have a tile of frequently accessed items that I could pick from in addition to the current 4 most recent items.

But then, that's why I've made a bookshelf(s) for reference documents.

if you access something once on the old tiled home screen by mistake or if you change your mind it can (easily) be dismissed.

also an advantage (for my own requirement's) is i can have 12 collections on the old tiled home screen compared to only 1 collection on the current home screen. when you have 35 pages of collections and counting (as i do) that's an extremely important/useful feature to have.

best wishes koboy

In the long run, the things you accessed most frequently would push off the things you only accessed once.

I know this is an old debate, and the classic home screen is never coming back, so I won't belabor the point. I just get the sense that the new home screen was designed by a marketing department and not a software engineer.

History is replete with examples proving that software engineers often don't consider the "U" in UI to be particularly important, an argument can be made for saying that marketers might actually care more about that. The wide range of reactions to the current Kobo home screen shows that subjectivity still reigns supreme. There are many of us who DO like it, and find its design sensible and practical, meeting our Usage needs in a way that previous iterations did not.
