Kindle Oasis, books sent to device have "title & series" as the book name

Windows 10, Calbire 4.22, Oasis 9th gen with latest Kindle firmware, Jhowell's KFX plugins and de-drm

I download my books from Amazon using Kindle for Windows, and then import them via De-DRM into Calibre. I then convert from AZW3 to MOBI. I can open the books fine using the Windows book viewer and all the listed Calibre metadata is correct. I can also create a full Catalog.

When I send the MOBI books to my device, every book title is listed as "title & series" on the home screen with the author's name shown correctly. I can open and read the books on the Kindle.

My device directory tree shows the correct title and so forth.

I've used this Kindle for a couple of years now and have never seen this before. I recently did the full reset on it while troubleshooting USB issues so it was back to factory.

Btw, my USB issue turned out to be a cable issue but I still can't believe it. I have any number of micro USB cables I use on my devices and that I have frequently used with this device. At some point in the last month or so the device would charge but Windows didn't see anything or acknowledge a device was connected. I actually got out one of my original Amazon kindle cables and now the device is recognized again with that cable only. I suspect this is related to the June firmware update somehow. I'm only adding it here because it was strange and vexing. Cables that had worked consistently for years now do not.

I am also experiencing difficulty ejecting the device to unplug it. Windows keeps beeping with the USB insert/remove noises and the Kindle screen flashes back and forth between the home screen and the "connected" screen. If I just unplug the cable it sticks on the "connected" screen until I hard reset it with the power key. When I reconnect it, I invariably get the Windows notification that something is wrong with the drive and I need to scan and fix it. Frustrating, but ignorable until the disk actually corrupts in some way.

I don't believe the USB stuff is Calibre related, just wanted to post it in case someone is searching for the same issue.

Ok, so comparing the MOBI on the device with the one on the PC, I see that the metadata in the MOBI is being rewritten as "title & series". Where is this controlled from?

Ok, found the metadata plugboard and fixed the template... problem solved.

It's my understanding that AZW3 is the more capable format than MOBI, so I'm wondering why you convert the books to MOBI? (Unless you have a very ancient kindle that only works with MOBI.)

An Oasis 9th gen should have no issues with azw3 or KFX.

I think this 'Mobi required" misconception is from many sites that never updated their 'Which version (format) to pick instructions. (Many users here, seem not much better with only a 'Kindle' listed as their device. The Model, does help us helpers give the best solution rather one that sorta gets by )
4th Gen, on, Kindles have no problems with AZW3 (I avoid KFX, so I don't have that info)

Yes, and even worse, some sites tell you that Mobi is the preferred or best format. I know that in my early days of Kindle that's what I thought.

I like the portability aspect. I can take a MOBI onto anything. Also, for me at least, it's about full independence of my Library from Amazon. All my e-books can go anywhere, none DRM'd, and even if Calibre stops developing they can go anywhere.

What am I missing out on using MOBI over AZW3? Automatically embedded bookmarks or last page read that moves between the Kindle and Calibre?

Better layout control such as indenting block quotes, ability to embed larger images, etc. are items you may notice when reading. Overall, azw3 brought the flexibility of epub to Amazon's ereaders while mobi has changed little since I read .prc files on a Palm Pilot.

Are you talking about using them on tablets, phones, and laptops as well as a Kindle? In that case I'd go with EPUB. There could be some formatting that's in an AZW3 that gets lost when it's converted to MOBI since it uses a rather old version of HTML. But the formatting won't get lost when an AZW3 is converted to EPUB. But then you'd need whatever format it was in when you got the book from Amazon, for your Kindle, and EPUB for the other things.

Or, you can avoid that mess and get a Kobo, or something else that uses EPUB. I started with a Kindle but decided to try the Kobo and its user interface is far superior to the Kindle's. But I still buy all of my books from Amazon and do like you do, load them into Calibre where the DRM is removed, then convert them to EPUB then load them onto my Kobo.

I took a look at the Kobo readers and I think I know what to ask for this Christmas. For the longest time the Kindle just had such an edge on the technology that I'd stopped looking for alternatives.

I am concerned though that at some point we might lose the ability to use the older Kindle PC app to strip the DRM. That will be a problem no matter what I do here though.

I've never used the Kindle PC app for retrieving the books; I use their "my devices and content" web page to download the book and then drag it into calibre.

The only reason I bought a used Kindle was for if/when Amazon breaks my ability to disable KFX downloads, I (might) still be able to use download and transfer via USB as a backup.

If they remove the download and transfer via USB option wouldn't that break things for the old kindles that don't have wifi or cellular? Amazon seems to be like Microsoft and good about maintaining legacy stuff.
