You need to be the Alpha Dog, so she isn't so needy, and to teach her acceptable behaviors. Google is your friend.

Since Thursday it's been over 30C degrees, having a Belgian sheperd on my lap is not my idea of fun. When I'm doing things like cooking or cleaning she is constantly in way. When I go to the toilet or upstairs to get something she waits at the living room door making squeaky sounds. When the cat does something she thinks is naughty she starts making squeaky sounds. She's jealous when I give the cat any attention.

After three days of staying in I'm glad I'm working this morning. Granted, the weather also makes me more irritable than normal, but the clingy behaviour is really getting n my nerves. My friends' previous two dogs were much more independent and just did their thing, occasionally wanting to play or some attention.

Right now, cat Pien has the zoomies, making Keira squeak like crazy. I just told her to lie down on her pillow, that doesn't help with the squeaking but at least she isn't curled up against me for a little while.
You know, I've never seen a Belgian (Malinois? Tervuren?) that's needy. Did they rescue her, maybe?

Does she get a lot of exercise/walks?

She's a mix with another breed, possibly a Stafford Bull Terrier. Before my friends adopted her she lived on a farm and she was an outside dog. Her only entertainment were cars driving by, which is now a bit problematic when walking her.

She gets walked three times a day, about 15-20 minutes. When the weather is good enough her owner takes a cycle trip and she runs along.

My friend return on Monday night. My father will pick up my things in the early afternoon, I'll cycle home then to unpack and wash some clothes. I'll go back around 5pm for one last walk.

Last year I also got a bit annoyed with her, but this year it's worse because of her jealousy and tattle taling on the cat.

Guys, update on my Andi-cat that I posted about a bit ago: she's doing great. The vet is across town but I took her there for another skin check and for flea meds and a nail trim and she didn't need more shots. She is so sweet and playful. Not as much of a momma's girl as my Cinder was but I had Cinder from 4 weeks. Andi is 3-5 years old but she is still quite affectionate.

I totally wonder, since the TNR people found her in mid-May and COVID was going strong here from late March and was particularly deadly here, if her person was an older person who died and the person's family tossed her out. She runs FROM the door when it is opened and is a total lady cat with house manners.

Running from the door is not unusual. I have a cat (since she was ~10 weeks old) who is never seen if there is a stranger in the house. Including the cat sitter, who pets her when she is alone in the house. If I'm not away, it's somehow different, and she goes into hiding.

Or if there were a lot of strangers going in and out after the owner died, the cat may have escaped on its own. If it didn't have a tag or microchip then there was no way for whoever found it to trace the owner.

It's great that she has a good home with you now!

My Maine Coons are inquisitive about the doors--given that they've never been outdoor cats, they're curious. But strangers? Hooo dawgie! Storm, the silvery tabby female, will race up to a stranger and introduce herself and demand attention. The male isn't quite such a ho, but he wants to meet people, too. It's odd--I've never seen cats behave like this around strangers, but these two definitely do. More like dogs than cats.

Its great to hear she's doing well. Our cats also run away from the door at the top of stairs (downstairs is the store). They both escaped downstairs when we just had them, once when the store was open and someone forgot to close the door they were peaking around the corner at the top of stairs and they ran when customers entered. Since then they've lost all interest in going downstairs and when the door at the top of the stairs is open they refuse to even enter the hallway.

But when someone they don't know comes upstairs they do come to check them out. If it's a quiet, relaxed person they usually come up to them to ask for attention, when it's a loud person they tend to keep their distance after coming over to sniff them.

I've never had a Maine Coon cat, but I've heard they can be more outgoing than some other breeds.

When I was growing up we lived in the country and our cats were outdoor cats. Some of them were always trying to come inside when the door was open, especially if someone was cooking!

Thanks, guys. Yeah. Her coat is looking great, too. My Cinder, despite being an indoor, would rush the door trying to get out. Andi doesn't do that but she just acts in all ways like a housecat. Like I said, she is a lady-cat with house manners. She knows what scratching boards and litterboxes are, for sure.

Next week, my work schedule flips from 1 physical day and 4 virtual days to 4 physical days and 1 virtual day. I hope she won't feel abandoned.

Andi looks like my sister's cat, Baby Kitty.

We have no pets now, but for years always had cats. Their personalities were all very different. Our last 2, Atticus and Peanut, were extremely different.

Atticus never met a stranger, and would always jump up on the half-wall by the door when anyone came in. He was a "Real Boy" and was well known among our kid's friends. He was 15 when mouth cancer necessitated a peaceful goodbye. He was simply the best cat ever.

Peanut was afraid of just about everything. She was a stress eater-barfer. She was as sweet as can be with us. She loved to harass Atticus at times, walking innocently by him, only to quickly bop him on the nose and take off running. She was 12-13 I think when we had to put her down.

Our first cat Poncho only lived to be 8. He was a beautiful black & white, very regal. I had him before we got married, and he hated my husband at first, and would torment him whenever possible. He would sit in the window above our headboard at night, and jump down, hitting the mattress right beside hubby's head. He would jump up and swat the light switch to turn the hallway light on in the middle of the night.

Once our first child came along, Poncho made friends with T. He developed epilepsy, and Valium was the only treatment at the time. A dose high enough to prevent seizures made him sluggish so much he wouldn't do anything but sit under a chair. Lower doses and the seizures came back. He started to get crazy mean after a seizure, so we had to let him go.

We love cats, but can't say goodbye again. And I don't miss the hair or litter boxes.

Cats

I miss having cats! Had them for about 35 years, various ones. The last pair were both B&W tuxedos. The larger older one, Pumpkin, hid for about 24 hours after I got them. She came out while I had a friend over! After that she was very outgoing with strangers. Also would get out of the apartment when I came home and opened the door. Had to take precautions to prevent that.

The other tux, Oreo, got sick only a couple of years later with IBD. We had many visits to the vet and I gave many B12 shots to her. Poor thing. She died two years after that. Since I had spent so much on the vet for Oreo, I did not take Pumpkin back to the vet for a long time. When I got Pumpkin, the previous owner told me she was 10 years old. She died at 22 (the vet didn't believe it).

Less than a year before she died, I took her to the vet because of a patch of hair that was lost (itching or something). They did some work on her and she had to wear a cone for a while. A month later I took her back for dental work. It was $1200! A lot of it was extractions. This was only about 4 days before my brother died (a shock, of course), in January, 2016. She recovered and seemed fine until September when she stopped eating. Took her in and knew she was a goner but an assistant vet insisted on trying some things to get her eating. She had pancreatitis. Two days later I went in to see her and saw the top vet and he said they might be able to save her but she might be back in there soon. I said no. It's her time. So sad. I was doubly depressed because I thought the other vet was extending her time for the money. It was another $2300 including the cremation and all the care time and meds. Is there a sad emoji here?

I never got another cat. I wasn't sure where I would be in two years when I retired. I'm still here. The building management always got after me about having a cat. It turns out when I see the ads for other apartments here, the policy is no dogs. Recently they had an ad for one that said pets allowed. I had a pulmonary embolism in 2018 right after retirement. I didn't have to be in the hospital, but I thought if I had a cat, what if I had to be in hospital suddenly and my neighbors are not friendly like the ones I used to have and I wouldn't expect them to step up to help. Last time i went away while i had Pumpkin, I used a paid cat sitter. But you have to reserve them, so if I ever have to suddenly go into hospital (or die), I would hate to leave them for someone to abandon or find someone to adopt. A friend of mine died suddenly at age 70 in 2019 and left two cats. Luckily she had some friends who were experienced with finding adopters (and she was in NJ. I'm in the big city).

That is my vent and rant!

My first cat in 1981 was a short-hair black one. The person who rescued her said it was a male, but a little while after i got her, she started crooning in the night. Took her to the vet, who confirmed she was female, so I had her spayed. She was an only cat for a few years and hated other people. Would hiss at them. If someone came over, she went into the bathroom and sat on the ledge of the tub between the curtain and the liner. She especially hated any men (she was right, as it turned out). I got another cat. A man who moved in with me later brought in a cat that was his ex-wife's and the two cats co-existed. The black cat (Bates, who I named after my mother's maiden name) died at 8 during a heat wave. I found her when I got home late after a day of work and going to a Mets baseball game. It was traumatic for me. Took the body to the Animal Medical Center on the east side the next morning for cremation. I don't know what caused her to get sick. She didn't eat for a couple of days. Felt guilt for not taking her to a vet sooner. A couple of months later I got two kittens from my hometown in NJ, so I had three cats for quite a while.

This year I haven't had much problems with my eczema, I realized earlier in the week. I wish I hadn't. Yesterday I got a slightly itchy rash on top of my left hand. Of course I had forgotten to pack my eczema cream, but I did bring my Bio-Oil with me and made the itching stop. Tonight I found two small blisters on the side of one finger. I've had this type of eczema bad several years from spring until it cooled down in autumn. Then suddenly last year I had one or two small flare ups. And this year, so far, I hadn't happened.

Luckily, they're not itchy, I'll put some Bio-oil on it and a bandage around my finger so I can touch it. I know from experience that once I start scratching the break out will only get worse.

It's probably a combination of the heat of the past week and a half and a stressful week. Add to that that the last couple of nights I got a whole bunch of mosquito bites. At least I'm lucky, mosquito bites stopped itching for me a couple of years ago, I just get a red spot that usually disappears within a couple of days.

I'm glad I'm going home in two days; we hardly get any mosquitos there.

My throat is doing okay. After the Prednison course it went back to being irritated, as before. After a couple of days the irritation suddenly disappeared. The last couple of days I tend to get a bit of dry throat in the late afternoon. But that could also be because of the fan I've got aimed at me most of the day. If it's an allergy it will return next week, when I go home. So I just have to wait and see.

Our reasonably new Honda Odyssey has an undocumented "feature" -- if you press and release the "unlock" button on the remote, the van doors unlock. If you press and release the "unlock" button on the remote and then hold the button down, the van doors unlock and all of the windows roll down. It's not a feature I want and I can't imagine ever using it (deliberately) but it apparently can't be disabled.

Some time last night, while I was in the house and the van was in the driveway, I managed to do the magic button press. All of the windows rolled down. Right before the overnight rain.
