sync problems again!
A few weeks ago I posted about my Kobo Clara HD not syncing either hooked up to the computer or to the wireless. The suggestion was I reset my kobo account. I did this and it worked, but I needed to redownload everything. And it stopped working today.

I understand this is because the database gets corrupted. Is there a way to fix the database? I'd prefer to do that then to download all my books again, if at all possible.

Or should I buy a newer Kobo model? I've been considering it for a while. Do new Kobos have the same problem?

For what it's worth, I haven't had this problem with my Kobo Clara and I don't recall seeing complaints here from other Clara owners.

Hopefully one of the more tech-savvy members will come along with advice regarding your database.

@NightStar76: All the Kobo devices share the same firmware. The only differences are related to the hardware. If there is a bug on one, it will be on the others as well.

For the problem you are seeing, have you tested the database? If it is corrupt, that at least gives a reason for the sync failure. But, you should be seeing other problems, such as the loss of reading status, or books being reimported. If the database is being corrupted frequently, it could be a failing SD card in the device. In the Clara HD, this can be replaced and a new image applied.

You could also turn logging on and see if there is anything obvious in the logs. There might be an error showing why it is failing.

Also, what is actually happening? Are new books not downloading? Or is it the reading status?

I've found sometimes sync gets stuck for other reasons than just database corruption.
When I notice it's stuck, sometimes I can fix it by turning off wifi until the sync icon stops spinning, and then retry the sync. When that doesn't work, a reboot usually fixes it. Especially turning off wifi, _then_ rebooting, then doing a manual sync.

But also, the sync does multiple things, and I suspect if one gets stuck, the things after it never start. Sometimes I can start the sync in a different place (e.g., on the pocket articles screen) and it'll do the sync in a different order and work.

What's happening is the sync stops at 'updating books' and stays there for hours or until the battery runs out. I haven't tried the idea of changing where I perform the sync, but it's set to sync automatically so sometimes I open up the kobo in the morning and it's out of battery from syncing all night without getting anywhere.

I have a lot of sideloded shelves, and I wonder if it is trying and failing to sync those.

I turned off automatic sync exactly because of what you describe.
Even with autosync off, it still automatically starts the sync at random moments when the wifi is already on.

I wish everyone would actually read what is on that settings page. The section heading is "Background sync". The options are whether that happens and when. The comment underneath explains this is for the "daily Automatic Sync".

If WiFi is on, the device will sync at other times, but, the sync won't be as compete as the above, or manually starting the sync. If you open a purchased book, it will sync that books status. If you go to the Pocket Articles, it will sync those. Go to the My Books and the books will be synced. Turning WiFi on will trigger the sync. There is a timer built in so that there will be at least 30 minutes between any of these.

I was aware of that. I think the daily automatic sync might actually turn wifi on when it was off, but I might be misremembering it.

Thanks for enumerating all the instances where it syncs.
That could be helpful if there's a specific thing that needs to be synced.

It definitely doesn't. The only way for WiFi to be turned on is if you turn it on. I think that if you have the daily sync enabled, it will wake and attempt to sync, but, when it finds that WiFi is off, won't be able to actually do the sync.
