I never 'put mine to sleep' Never. If it goes there by itself, fine. But I always use the "off" switch in the back. And it takes all of 10 seconds (if that long) to power back up, and yes, the book opens exactly where I left it.

I've done this since day one.

Yea, I used to do that too. I just use sleep now all the time. On the K1 does that switch actually turn it off?

Someone here (tompe? Igor?) posted that it didn't actually turn it 'off'. I have no clue whether it does or not.

I just remember when I first got mine, the Amazon kindle discussions forums were loaded with complaints that the sleep feature did drain the battery.....altho that may have been that bad batch of batteries back then.

At any rate....I'm comfortable doing what I"m doing.

Well thanks to a post by TallMom I've figured out there is nothing wrong with my battery. I didn't realize how much juice it used (or time it took) indexing books and I had loaded about 500 onto mine. Now my battery is behaving as I'd have expected.

Too bad CS didn't bring that up. They sent out a new one next day air. Guess I'll be refusing shipment on the replacement.

I received my third K2 today. So far it's great. The screen doesn't fade in the sun and it seems pretty contrasty. The wireless has been a little weird. Dropped connection a few times at first but it's working a bit better now. I hope this is the last one!

The first week I loaded up with 2000 books just to see what would happen. What I found out is that it takes a very, very long time to index and as the index file grows, the memory quickly disappears. And the Kindle is slow to respond.

Amazon also sends you an email when you are out of memory and have pending documents to download assuming that Whispernet is on.

I removed all the books after 4 or 5 days because the Kindle was still indexing and it was very sluggish. Also battery life was measured in hours.

Now, I have around 100 books and documents and all is fine.

This is normal behavior. I don't see the big deal about learning to either:

1. Don't turn off your Kindle (there's really no point unless you're on a plane), or
2. Just go to the Home screen first.

I suspect what happens is the Kindle doesn't store the page you're on automatically when you turn a page. It probably waits until the next write to flush it out. There are other things you can try... hitting Menu first, for example. But it's probably semi-random depending on the book and your Kindle's particulars.

Oh come on, what's the point in loading up thousands of books? Even for testing... It's not a working condition.

Why not? I know folks that keep thousands of books on their readers regularly. I've got about 500 on my Kindle right now, although I think I'm going to drop that down to about 100-150 eventually.

I've got 800 right now; took 4 or 5 days for it to index them all. I plan to add another 500 or so.

I didn't answer the poll because I'm not sure how to answer the question. My Kindle 2 has all its buttons in good working order and doesn't fade in the sun, but sometimes it acts as if the menu button sticks when I push it; the menu flashes and disappears before I can pick anything. So far I've just pushed the menu button a few times until it actually worked. I'm not sure whether this is some sort of mode error on my part--whether I should be doing something before I push the menu button to put it into the right mode--or whether it's an actual defect in the unit. And if it *is* an actual defect, I'm not sure whether I want to send it in and take my chances on a defective replacement, because there are a lot of other defects out there that would bother me a lot more than the menu button issue.

The first one would not make proper contact with the charger. The second one has a volume rocker that doesn't work properly. The "up" seems perpetually pushed in, but responds to a light "touch". It is annoying in that, while walking and listening to TTS, if it is bumped it blares at maximum volume. As of now I'm keeping it, but it still it's still annoying.

On my K1 I kept my *entire* library consisting of over 4000 books. I like being able to access any of my books at will. Why? Because I can. On the K2 I'm limited to internal memory so I can't carry even half my library.
