Cannot download purchased book

This morning I went on an ebook buying spree. My account is set to download new purchases to my kindle. When I picked up the kindle this evening, none of the books had downloaded and it took a couple of minutes for the covers to show up for most of the titles. They did not download until I tapped on them. I continued to have trouble with 2 books. I went to the device content page in a web browser and sent them again. Repeatedly. I tried downloading directly from the kindle. The titles would either stay stuck with the “queued” banner or just revert to the cover and not download. I toggled airplane mode on and off. I sync’d. Both titles download to my ipad just fine. The kindle’s wifi connection is fine. I have restarted it twice. Firmware is 5.12.5 and no updates are available. There is 25.7Gb of storage available. One of the problem titles downloaded after the first restart but the second one simply won’t download. Now it doesn’t even have the queued banner, it’s just the black circle with an ‘x’ on the greyed out cover.
Not sure what else to do other than perhaps return and repurchase the book. I don’t feel like dealing with tech support over an item that cost $1, but I would like the book.

I just tried the option of viewing it from the store on my kindle. I tapped on ‘read now’ and it should be downloading. It is not.

This is a Paperwhite, 10th gen.

Try the "Download and transfer by USB" option. That should download the book to your computer and you can copy it to your Kindle from there.

A reboot may help. Press and hold the power button for a full 40 seconds, then set it down and wait while it reboots. Connect to WiFi, and see if it downloads. If not, it should show correctly in the ALL tab of the Paperwhite, and tapping it should begin the download.

This process has been hinky for me as well for some time now.

Thank you, @Sirtel and @Deskisamess. I rebooted several times. It didn’t help.

I thought, ok I’ll try downloading to my Windows laptop. From the device content page, every place to download was greyed out so I couldn’t download it directly to the hard drive. I have a Kindle app on the laptop, so I opened it. But it wouldn’t let me sign in, kept saying my email or password were wrong. However, I kept getting the verification codes by text, so I knew my email and password were correct. So...app outdated perhaps? It came preinstalled on the laptop, purchased about 4 years ago, and I’ve never used it. Actually, these days the laptop seldom even gets powered on and the only reason it was today is so I could deal with this issue. I considered downloading and installing the app from the Amazon website on my laptop, and I got thinking, “This is a whole lot of hassle for a single $1 book.” I walked away for a while, then decided to try something I’ve never done before: connect my Kindle to my laptop by USB. I did that, and then went to the content page in a browser to download the title. The Kindle showed up in the dropdown menu as a download destination and the instructions said to download it to the documents folder in the Kindle.

Problem solved!

The book is Don Miguel Ruiz’s Little Book of Wisdom, from Amazon.com.

I did manage to get it downloaded to the Kindle device by connecting it to a Windows laptop.

I purchased another ebook last evening. It didn’t immediately download to the Kindle, but when I tapped on it, it downloaded right away. It may have done so on its own if I had given it more time, perhaps.

A Windows computer needs to be used regularly. It's important to keep it updated so it works properly and stays secure. That's a pain if you don't have much call to use a computer but nevertheless it has to be done. Otherwise, it's not going to behave as you want. There are likely to be umpteen updates waiting to be installed. If you tackle this be prepared for a long session. Interrupting Windows updates when they are installing will result in the computer failing to load the OS so you'll need patience.

I had the same problem with periodicals and calibre-emailed-to-amazon stuff. It went away when I went to Amazon's Manage Your Kindle page and reset the default device to a different device and then back to the problematic one.

For the longest time now books I buy don't automatically download to my Oasis. I've rebooted it, changed the default device to something else and back, etc. X-ray also is greyed out for all new titles I get, even though it's included (it works on the Kindle app for my iPhone). The only way I can get books to download is to manually download them from "Your Library". When I find new versions of books are available via "My content and devices" and try to send them, they are never delivered.

It's should be a minor annoyance, but I admit it bothers me quite a bit...

If it's an ordinary book with no illustrations, you might contact Amazon if it is a recent purchase. The wifi connection in your unit may be failing. One of the units I got from Woot did that. The 3g worked, but the wifi stopped working after about 5 days. They replaced it.

The wifi works great. I can manually download the new books via wifi. It's been behaving like this for months. It's just this weird issue where the Kindle refuses to see things are queued up for download. I can sync, and it always says no updates. I've searched and there are plenty of people on Reddit complaining about this issue over the last couple of years.

I have bunch of books borrowed from kindleunlimited but these books doesn't support KINDLEDEVICES. They are in unsupported format can't help with it except using Kindle App to read...

I’ve purchased a few ebooks since, and the titles appear on the kindle, but they didn’t spontaneously download, not even the book cover. I had to tap on each title individually. The Kindle is set as my default device.

I’ll keep watching this.

This is exactly the problem I have. And for all those new books, the X Ray doesn't work. And when updated versions of books become available, those will not push to my Kindle any longer either. But Whispersync and all other network related things work fine.

I just developed this same problem with one (and only one) of my books. After a few fruitless days of resets and trying to download, I found this thread, tried the solution offered by NullNix and Voila! - the book dowloaded with no problem! Thanks for the good advice!
