It looks like there's even a Kobo South African store...
https://www.kobo.com/za/en NEVER MIND. For buying eReaders (themselves) it takes you to Takealot. But the eBooks could be bought at Kobo SA. Last edited by rcentros; 07-19-2020 at 06:17 PM. |

I have the current and previous generations of Paperwhite. I don't really prefer one over the other. I keep mine online so I can't really speak to what features you lose by not connecting them.
I also have a couple of Kobos. I do prefer the Kindle to the Kobo but not by much. If I could only have one I'd prefer a Kindle but I'd be okay with either one. That said, these days I do most of my reading on my phone. It's always in my pocket and I'm just not motivated to go find my Kindle when I already have the phone handy. In my opinion there really aren't any bad choices here. I'd just use whatever you feel like using. They're all good. Barry |

Thanks for the answers, did try reply yesterday but kept getting error and can't post duplicate and then eventually said can't post anymore today
![]() So as you may see it's not just a case of not wanting to have ereader that relise on being online often, it's more a case of me not going nuts with a bad cell signal. So I choose to avoid things that would drive me nuts. Out of curiosity, the kindle with adverts, do they pop up when reading? Or only in sleep mode and home screen. Have a feeling the 2 sales guys are in for a big surprise when next I see them, as they said even when reading. |

I've never registered my device, though you'll miss out on stuff like creating collections and reading lists so there's that. Apart from that, deleting books is fine even without an account.

I have looked at kobo's online shop noticed their ebooks cheaper than amazon, can buy 3 for the price of 2 from amazon. But also don't like buying electronic goods online, they get damaged or go missing etc. Takealot are so busy now, lots of complaints about delivery and they have even switched off phone, you have to post a message on message board and they may get back to you within 72 hours. |

The Kindle will download the dictionary when you first try to use it, so you will need to be on-line to allow the dictionary to download. There are two versions of the Kindle PW4. One has only WiFi, the other has both WiFi and a subscription-free Mobile Data connection to access the Amazon servers over cell towers. If you can make a WiFi hotspot with your phone, the more expensive one with mobile data probably isn't worth the extra to you. You can download books from Amazon directly to the Kindle over WiFi, or you can connect the Kindle to your computer by USB and copy books onto it manually or using calibre. You can delete books from the Kindle without the Kindle being connected. If you want to read the same book sometimes on your kindle and sometimes on your phone, the last read position will only be transferred if the Kindle is connected to WiFi. |

Currently use a phone and a tablet and all I do is search for a word on the other device and start reading. But if battery lasts days on kindle I wouldn't need to do that. Unless taking it for granted that a PW4 has search function. |

Yes, PW4 does have a search function. Or you can just note the location, and use 'Go To Location'.

The Kindle would be better if there were more options for how the eBook is displayed. Needs smaller margins, smaller line height, and more font size options. Also, it needs to be able to allow Calibre to access the database to manage collections. And KFX needs to go away and KF8 needs to allow better typesetting. Then the Kindle would be worlds better then it is.
