Kindle PW gen 10 some advice please

Hi, want to get my first eink device, but it seems I can only get kindle in SA, kobo is not stocked in shops and online don't have stock either. So I am spoiled for choice it seems. Local shop only stock PW gen10, but it seems a good device and has no adverts a plus for me. I currently use my phone and tab to read, use calibre and cc to manage ebooks. So don't need or want cloud storage. I don't have permanent Internet access, I share my phones access with pc when I really have to, but even cell reception can be bad.Was told by sales guy I should get the PW as I don't have permanent Internet. Is this true? Seems odd it won't work without Internet and nothing online says this is true or false. Please advise.

It works fine without any connection whatsoever. I've never needed to connect to the internet so it's on airplane mode 100% of the time. I update my Kindle using my desktop so I have no worries about that too.

Have you checked at Kobo.com to see if they will ship to you?

Thanks, wonder why sales guy said don't. From what I have read 1 couldn't delete books from the device unless online, but also read they stopped that. What about registering your device, was told you had to. Just don't want to buy a paper weight.

If you don't register, there are some functions you cannot use.

Plus the kindles screen sits flush, not reset, and I just know I will get flour all over it so flush will be easier to clean. Yes I currently use phone for recipes so will want to use ereader.

The PW4 screen is not as clear as the PW3 because it's flush. The layers have more space between them on the PW4 to make it flush and that makes the screen less clear.

If Kobo will ship to you then they will support your Kobo. Plus, you get excellent support here on Mobileread.

Think till I have used a dedicated ereader I am kinda clueless on functions. Dictionary and total time till end of book is all I ever used.

If Kobo will ship to you then they will support your Kobo. Plus, you get excellent support here on Mobileread.

Silly thing is I think the same guys that bring in kindle also do kobo. I also like a shop to see a person so that if the device fails I can throw it at them

Hear the kobo works better with calibre.

Hear the kobo works better with calibre.

Kobo works very well with Calibre. Also Kobo have much better eBook management. eBook management is almost non-existent on Kindles. I bought my Kobo online and I've had it for almost 6 years.

Collections don't work unless registered. I'm not sure if the dictionary works on a Kindle that's never been online. Can you share your phone's internet connection via air (i.e. create a wifi hotspot)? If yes, you can connect your Kindle once for registering and it can be offline forever after that.

Don't worry not rushing out just yet, want to confirm things about kindle and go back to shop and talk to manage. Looked same company imports both so will find out more as to why they don't do kobo anymore.

Want to know why I was told not to buy the kindle, has things changed from PW3 to PW4, or do they just have no clue.

Yes can share phone's connection make a wifi hotspot. Already made an amazon account, to test what they ask for, didn't even ask for a credit card number, maybe they will ask when I try to register a device, don't know.

The deleting of book and pdf's etc without going online was also a made up story or what? Or was that changed in the firmware upgrade?

Mostly they don't have a clue, I'd guess. But read my previous post.

You can delete content from a Kindle that isn't connected to the web. You can use a WiFi hot spot to connect a Kindle.

You can pay a bit extra and buy a Kindle that offers 3G and WiFi. Those models connect using cell towers when there is no WiFi to use. Uses that don't have easy access to WiFi can buy that model.

Many users only connect to WiFi when downloading new books. Many keep their devices offline at other times. That type of use poses no limitations to functions.
