Portable reader works, main reader doesn't.

When I click on a book in installed Calibre on my PC the reader opens a transparent rectangle with the title of the book, the minimise, maximise and close controls on the top right as usual and that's it.

I have had to download portable Calibre and point .mobi etc at that to read a book having disabled all file types in Preferences on the main program.

What have done wrong? I've just updated to the latest 4.21 64-bit but it's been like that for ages.

What version of calibre portable are you using? Are you running Windows 10? Generally, the type of issue you are seeing is a conflict between the QT WebEngine code and your video driver. So the first recommendation is that you update your video driver if that is possible. If not, you may want to check the Viewer in 4.2 opens with only blank white page thread in the Viewer subforum.

I added the environment variable as suggested to stop hardware acceleration. Windows 10 did find a later graphics driver for me. All to no effect. I uninstalled Calibre and portable Calibre and deleted every file on my PC with the word 'Calibre' in it and every entry in the registry with the word Calibre in it and reinstalled the latest Calibre. Same problem. So in the end I uninstalled Calibre 4 and installed Calibre portable 3.48 which works fine and does what I want.

In the future, Geek Uninstaller can often get rid of all of that for you.
