I'm a fairly fast typist, except that lately my splint hits keys I do not intend it to.

I"m an excellent typist.

One of the few things I do really well.

I also insist my kids and grandkids learn the keyboard.

Once its learned, like reading, you can fly like the wind........with a little practice!

Normally I type with most of my fingers and thumbs (for the space bar only), and don't always need to look, but depending on what else I'm doing and the state of my fingers I use anything from one finger upwards.

Typing this reply I realise I rarely use my pinkies except for things like the shift keys.

I did that! I took lessons at college, stopped before the exam, and I don't tell potential employers.

I'm afraid that I still need to think about it. Typing does not come naturally because I'm self-taught.
In my school, only the middle and lower streamed girls were allowed to learn typing. We of the upper forms were expected to do better for ourselves. Boys weren't supposed to type at all. Girls were forbidden to learn woodwork. And, if you were slow but dogged, there was a class for would-be punch-card operatives.
I left school in the mid-1970s. Things have changed for the better, thankfully.

You missed a couple options.

"I never touch the typist, that would be wrong"

"Depends on the website"

pshrynk. I agree with your last point. I too find I'm using spell check more and more or else I have to get out the dictionary. I blame it on texting. That's my story anyhow, and I'm sticking to it.

We never did woodwork, but we did do a bit of metal work. And anyone who wasn't in the lowest stream was expected to have a burning desire to go into engineering of some kind (this was an all girls school in the 80s). There was no option at school to learn typing - it was something I did in college alongside doing A levels, and I have to say I have found it very useful (it's meant in the past I've been able to win speed-coding competions against male colleagues and so on )

Hey, I'm a touch typist. I look for the key, touch it and it gets typed. Basically I use two hands with two fingers per hand and thumbs on the space bar. This is during the morning hours. As the day goes on, the number of fingers diminishes until late at night, it's one finger on each hand.

I evidently older than Patricia but like her school, only the girls took typing in my school.

The main problem I have typing is I'm an atrocious speller and most of the time, my typing is coming from my head not from a hand written paper. Therefore I need to look at both the keys and the screen. Unfortunately I don't have stereoscopic vision. That said, I can often type faster (as far as the finished work) than some touch typist who are out of practice. They make more mistakes and end up spending time correcting them.

To exacerbate the problem, I'm a Southerner & like my speech, my verbal thinking is slow. I've also discovered that my verbal listening is slow.

I learned on a electric typewriter in school. I hated it, thought it was the most useless bunk I had ever done.... Those letter combinations haunted me in my nightmares... That summer I was at home on BBS's and such and finally realized after hours of typing I had never looked at the keyboard... Later some of my first jobs were doing data entry, the only problem I had with that was that many dumb terminal data entry keyboards don't use home row numbers and I've never been good with the number pad... They often dedicate those keys to functions and special characters.

So at the same time that I'm composing my response and typing, my brain is processing the words that my ears are picking up. I'm not paying much attention to the TV, but as it is about 15 feet away, I cannot ignore it totally.
It might also be the quality of the keyboards... We used to have responsive keyboards, most of what is sold today is spongy.... Take a look at Unicomp they still manufacture buckling spring keyboards.

At 1988 this was THE computer to dream about. The fanciest machine you could ever dream about. This particular "little" machine has been singlehandedly controlling the operation in a steel factory for more than 10 years as a main control computer.

And please notice the logarithnic ruler (in English called properly the slide rule) cassualy sitting on the top. I can still use that analog computer.

Worryingly, I have the same trouble with a pencil and paper -- what would we do without spell check?

I loved all the writing, journalism and science classes I took in high school, but the most practical and long-term beneficial was Personal Typing. It was a half-year class for non-business types. We used manual typewriters and weren't allowed to go near the IBM Selectrics.

That was in 1975. In 1980, when I got my hands on a computer, it made things much easier. For many years now, if I need to write anything that won't fit on a Postit note, I sit at the PC keyboard. I even compose on the computer, without ever touching paper. I find it much easier and faster. Now all I need is a neural interface

When I was in school, typing was considered an elective and since I was in orchestra that took care of my elective. I think it should've been mandatory, but I guess they didn't see this computer age coming!
Nevertheless, I can hunt & peck pretty darn fast!
When I was working, I got really good at the using the number keypad without looking, but with my laptop, it's so frustrating having to type numbers without it!
