If you want your library to have a copy on Dropbox, you can sync it but stop syncing when calibre is running and restart syncing after calibre is closed. I am not sure how long ago it was that anyone was recommending using calibre with the working library stored on Dropbox (or any other cloud storage for that matter) but I don't remember ever seeing any recommendations to that effect in quite a while.

MMh, I don't know, it's very hard for me to believe that this syncronization corrupted my library since is running from the very beginning of it all. I never had problems in that sense, it just slowed the metadata saving a bit.

About the Calibre/Dropbox sinergy, well – I must say that actually I didn't know this forum back in those days, and my searches were very generic, but I started to consider the idea to put everything on Dropbox after reading about it on many- many websites. If you search for Calibre - Dropbox, at least from what I can see, on my Italian Google Search, you won't find any particular warning about using them together. But, still, I guess I will just make some backup And it'll work fine. I repaired the library , if I'll have problems like this again I'll just reduce considerably calibre plugins, because maybe they are too many and in every dialog message appears every installed plugin.

I gave a look to this Windows Defender and it's been there the whole time, silent and –apparently– full working.
Calibre main Library is –was– on Dropbox on a subfolder in Document directory – just moved it– but it has been there since the very first beginning (very long time ago) so I would not consider it the main cause . Folder moved (still on Dropbox), Library moved, situation not changed.

I went to Settings in Windows Defender and it seems like that Controlled Folder Access is not activated, but I have also CCleaner and when my Pc was quite out of space I used it several times, maybe it's not related to the issue but it has some Antivirus (and similar) functions too I guess. Should I exclude some app or folder from its "checkings" and protection activities?

I activated the automated adding from a folder directly on Calibre library, from Calibre ebook adding settings, some weeks ago, now I think that perhaps this could be what the antivirus (and similar apps, such Defender and CCcleaner in my case) may have seen like a "suspect" activity.. At least the timing seems quite corresponding. I disabled it, just in case, but nothing happened.

I'm tempted to repair the library from the installer, again. But it's not a long term solution apparently.
Some AV move the "infected" file(s) to quarantine. So it would be best to reinstall Calibre in case AVG screwed it up.

I would not even do that. If something was to go wrong on Dropbox, then that screw up would be transferred back to the working library.

If the program used to sync to Dropbox has an option to out go one way then use that so any changes on Dropbox will not be synced back tot he computer. Just have any changes on the computer sync to Dropbox.

Were you expecting all those folk to us the word WARNING?

Folk have PROBLEMS. They post in forums for SOLUTIONS.

The common answers (for NAS/backup): always Pause Sync, Mirror only (not 2-way), Never direct from any net attached device (It may work, but it IS FRAGILE and may stop without warning )
Kovids FAQ is based upon why many of these solutions are needed.

For ANY software: The Official site should always be your first stop

Yes, actually, if something could make such a "danger" I'm expecting to read about it on the first / second or third page of Google search— I think this search engine has been suffering worsening in the last years— but it's not THIS bad. People online love Calibre, and love Dropbox, obviously they try to make each other work together, unless this become CLEARLY a bad idea. People write online, and post their own experience. That means that maybe it's still a bad idea, like the web official guide says, but if there are not enough warnings about this, maybe it's not that unmanageable- at least for the big majority of the users. And I still can't be 100% sure it caused what I've seen in the past weeks on my library.
