The Prey of Gods by Nicky Drayden is $1.99 on Amazon.com

Quote:
In South Africa, the future looks promising. Personal robots are making life easier for the working class. The government is harnessing renewable energy to provide infrastructure for the poor. And in the bustling coastal town of Port Elizabeth, the economy is booming thanks to the genetic engineering industry which has found a welcome home there. Yes—the days to come are looking very good for South Africans. That is, if they can survive the present challenges:

A new hallucinogenic drug sweeping the country . . .

An emerging AI uprising . . .

And an ancient demigoddess hellbent on regaining her former status by preying on the blood and sweat (but mostly blood) of every human she encounters.

It’s up to a young Zulu girl powerful enough to destroy her entire township, a queer teen plagued with the ability to control minds, a pop diva with serious daddy issues, and a politician with even more serious mommy issues to band together to ensure there’s a future left to worry about.

Fun and fantastic, Nicky Drayden takes her brilliance as a short story writer and weaves together an elaborate tale that will capture your heart . . . even as one particular demigoddess threatens to rip it out.

If your only knowledge of this story is that execrable movie, don't let that affect your buying decision. They took everything important about the book out.

I found the image online. I don't think it's a cover to any edition of the book. The style of it links it to the movie, though I don't remember seeing it in the actual movie.

I disagree with your opinion on the Starship Troopers movie. Verhoeven had good reasons for changes that were made. Like growing up in a country that was under fascist occupation.

A book and a movie can be so radically different that they are practically unrecognizable, yet both can have merit. Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, for instance, which wildly deviates from the book.

He had good reasons, like he had not even read it: "I stopped after two chapters because it was so boring … It is really quite a bad book. I asked Ed Neumeier to tell me the story because I just couldn't read the thing. It's a very right-wing book."

The movie completely contradicts the point of the book; they are polar opposites. It may be an entertaining movie to some, but the book and movie should be viewed as completely independent works that share a title.

I like the book, audiobook and the movie (own them all!). Same basic premise, but different stories. For those who don't own the book, you should know that this is written as 1st person. I know some people can't stand that.

The Futurological Congress by Stanisław Lem is $1.99 on Amazon.com.

Quote:
Bringing his twin gifts of scientific speculation and scathing satire to bear on that hapless planet, Earth, Lem sends his unlucky cosmonaut, Ijon Tichy, to the Eighth Futurological Congress. Caught up in local revolution, Tichy is shot and so critically wounded that he is flashfrozen to await a future cure.

Babylon Steel by Gaie Sebold is $0.99 on Amazon.com and other stores (but not the publisher's ).

Quote:
Babylon Steel, ex-sword-for-hire, ex...other things, runs The Red Lantern, the best brothel in the city. She’s got elves using sex magic upstairs, S&M in the basement and a large green troll cooking breakfast in the kitchen, and she’d love you to visit, except...
She’s not having a good week. The Vessels of Purity are protesting against brothels, girls are disappearing, and if she can’t pay her taxes, Babylon’s going to lose the Lantern. She’d given up the mercenary life, but when the mysterious Darask Fain pays her to find a missing heiress, she has to take the job. And then her past starts to catch up with her in other, more dangerous ways. Witty and fresh, Sebold delivers the most exciting fantasy debut in years.
The sequel, Dangerous Gifts, is not on sale, but has the low price of $3.99.
