A cynic, and a fool.

Batteries typically last longer than some would like you to think. There are NSTG's out there that people are still using happily. Just imagine how much of an upgrade those owners are in for when/if they decide to get a new ereader to replace theirs.

I've decided that if I have no gotten a new Reader by the time my H20 battery goes, I will get a new one when the battery goes. I've had the H20 for almost six years. It will be six years come Thanksgiving.

you are of course entitled to your opinion. that being said anyone and yes that includes a cynic should be allowed to have a different opinion/view than you without being called a fool. as far as i'm concerned calling someone a fool is nothing more than abusive and insulting.

i believe that type of language is (always) unnecessary to use and it also reflects badly on that person's character/speaks volumes. although unfortunately/sadly sometimes it's all too predictable.

i've had my original Aura 6" for six years and the battery is still pretty good. i'd prefer when the battery goes to be able to replace it rather than having to buy a completely new ereader.

of course the usual disclaimer applies. it's each to their own

It would be interesting to see, in the case of Eink e-readers, which will fail more often after 5 years; the Flash storage or the battery. Either way, they are integral components that are not easy to replace and are expected to fail over time. Just something to keep in mind when buying these, the *are* disposable products.

i agree they are integral components, but they could both be fitted to be easily replaceable. manufacturer's choosing to glue in a non-replaceable battery isn't progressive.

edit. they are (purposely) made to be disposable products.

Battery. You might get 3 to 10 years out of it depending on usage (maybe x4 if WiFi is mostly off) and ambient temperature.

Flash does sort of fade, so exactly how long it lasts being refreshed by FW updates and replacing books is hard to say. Probably more than 10 years. It's the much higher capacity Flash used as laptop replacement drives that's much more short lived. It depends on cell size, bits per cell and layers of 3D NAND.

My H2O will be 6 years come November. The internal storage works no problem and the battery is till pretty good.

I do have a Sony Reader PRS-650 that needs a new battery and the internal storage has no problem.

I believe cynics are generally too caught up in always looking at the negative that they can’t (or won’t) see the positive. Which equates them to fools in my book. Of course I hold the same to blind optimism.

I find people who complain constantly about non serious things are generally not worth listening to.

How old is your particular PRS-650, and had you not bought a new ereader before the battery had issues would you rather have replaced the battery or bought a new ereader?

I go the 650 when it came out. Then I inherited a T1 and from the T1, I decided I wanted the Kobo Aura H2O because of the better firmware and larger screen.

If I did not get the T1, I might have gone for a new battery for the 650 ut I decided I liked the T1 better because of the fonts.

it's neither a negative or a complaint it's a statement of (fact) current major manufacturers of ereaders (choose purposely) to glue in a non-replaceable battery, when in fact if they wanted to they could easily make them replaceable.

good manners usually prevents me from pointing out the obvious, but in this case just for you i will make an exception. people who call others fools and other unnecessary insulting language weaken their own argument, and more often than not only need to look in their own mirror to see a prime example/definition of such needless words.

Look at cell phones. They don't have user replaceable batteries. Media players don't as well. Most portable electrons these days don't have user replaceable batteries. I blame Apple for this. If they had made the original iPhone with user replaceable batteries, other companies would have followed suit.
