Maigret's Pickpocket, apa Maigret and the Pickpocket, is about 5/6 of the way through the Inspector Maigret series by Georges Simenon. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07P9MW6LC
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/maigret-s-pickpocket-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
“One of the greatest writers of the twentieth century . . . Simenon was unequaled at making us look inside, though the ability was masked by his brilliance at absorbing us obsessively in his stories.” —The Guardian

When Inspector Maigret's wallet and badge are stolen on a bus, it sets off a chain of events culminating in a grisly murder case

A pickpocket steals Maigret's wallet only to contact him the following day, returning the stolen items on the condition that he come to the thief's apartment. When the agitated young thief leads Maigret to the body of his wife, dead of a gunshot wound to the head, he implores Maigret to take the case. Unsure whether he can trust him, the inspector becomes embroiled in a most unusual murder investigation.

Putting the detective's knowledge of Paris's underworld to the test, Maigret's Pickpocket is a shocking mystery from Georges Simenon.

More Christmas in July - who knows why

A Meg Langslow Christmas is an omnibus containing three Christmas themed titles in the Meg Langlow serise by Donna Andrews: Six Geese A-Slaying, Duck the Halls, and The Nightingale Before Christmas. It has dropped to £8.97 at Kindle UK, which works out to £2.99 each if you need all three, which is not too bad. I'm rather fond of this series, which still can make me laugh out loud at times...

Spoiler:
Quote:
New York Times bestselling author Donna Andrews combines murder and hilarity with a cast of eccentric oddballs in her Meg Langslow series. Here in a fabulous eBook bundle are three of her Christmas-themed mysteries in the series, perfect to cozy up with this holiday season.

This collection starts with Six Geese A-Slaying, centered around the Caerphilly holiday parade. When the local curmudgeon playing Santa is murdered, it’s up to Meg and Chief Burke to tackle a two-fold mission: solving the murder and saving Christmas.

Next in Duck the Halls, an unknown prankster is setting skunks and ducks loose in the New Life Baptist Church, seemingly to derail the Christmas concert. Before they can find the culprit, an elderly vestryman is found dead. Who would have murdered such a harmless old man? And will Meg ever be able to finish all of her shopping, wrapping, cooking, and decorating in time for Christmas Eve?

And finally in The Nightingale Before Christmas, Mother volunteers to take part in a Christmas-themed decorator show house—each room of a temporarily untenanted house is decorated by a different decorator for the public to tour. Mother insists that Meg pitch in, and she finds herself surrounded by flamboyant personalities who feel their professional reputations are at stake. When the rooms start to be sabotaged and a designer turns up dead, can Meg catch the real killer to clear Mother’s name?

Again £0.99 at Kindle UK if you missed it when it was VERY briefly on sale back in January...

Oooh, thank you!

I need a bunch of the early ones in the series to replace my tattered DTBs, and that's a good enough price to do it.

Fingers crossed for more of the earlier ones!

I'm not familiar with this new-ish author/series but it looks like exactly the sort of thing I like - a historical mystery, in a time/period I'm not really familiar with. The reviews aren't uniformly great, but some of the things some folks complain about (e.g. "too much explanation") are the sorts of things I often like about historical mysteries...

“An ingenious marriage of comedy and crime.” —Olga Tokarczuk, Nobel laureate and author of Man Booker International Prize winner Flights

A charming, witty, and deliciously spooky mystery, inspired by the work of Agatha Christie, following a bored socialite who becomes Cracow’s most cunning amateur sleuth.

Cracow, 1893. Zofia Turbotyńska—professor’s wife and socialite—is bored at home, with little to do but plan a charity auction sponsored by the wealthy residents of a local nursing home and the nuns who work there.

But when one of those residents is found dead, Zofia finds a calling: solving crimes. Ridiculed by the police, who have declared the deaths of natural cause, she starts her own murder investigation, unbeknownst to anyone but her loyal cook Franciszka and one reluctant nun. With her husband blissfully unaware of her secret, Zofia remakes herself into Cracow’s greatest—or at the very least, most surprising—amateur detective.

Full of period character and charm, Mrs. Mohr Goes Missing proves that everyone is capable of finding their passion in life, however unlikely it may seem.

Fully laden, the Napoli limps off to Cyprus, but desperately needs a new master—and Heritage Mariner of London are requested to provide one.

Recalled from his honeymoon, John Higgins is the only captain available.

But this ship has trouble written all over her.

She’s an ageing rust-bucket with a multi-racial crew, and the containers on board are filled with chemical and nuclear poison.

Still, Higgins’ orders are simple enough: take her home to Naples.

But, when they arrive, they find this is only the first of many ports to refuse the leper ship entry.

With an increasingly mutinous crew, and acidic waste eating away at her insides, there seems nowhere left to turn...

The Silver Gun is the first in the Art Deco historical series by by L.A. Chandlar. It has dropped to £1.58 at Kindle UK, and is also only $1.99 at Kindle US. It looks pretty promising to me, but unfortunately, if you like it (and it has pretty decent ratings), the next two titles are $9.99 in the US, and over £10 in the UK. Sigh!

Agatha and Silver Falchion Award Nominated Author

New York City, 1936. In the midst of the Great Depression, the Big Apple is defiantly striving toward an era infused with art, architecture, and economic progress under the dynamic Mayor La Guardia. But those in City Hall know that tumultuous times can inspire both optimism and deadly danger . . .

It’s been six months since Lane Sanders was appointed Mayor Fiorello “Fio” La Guardia’s new personal aide, and the twenty-three-year-old is sprinting in her Mary Janes to match her boss’s pace. Despite dealing with vitriol from the Tammany Hall political machine and managing endless revitalization efforts, Fio hasn’t slowed down a bit during his years in office. And luckily for Lane, his unpredictable antics are a welcome distraction from the childhood memories that haunt her dreams—and the silver gun she’ll never forget.

When Lane gets attacked and threatened by an assailant tied to one of most notorious gangsters in the city, even the mayor can’t promise her safety. The corrupt city officials seem to be using Lane as a pawn against Fio for disgracing their party in the prior election. But why was the assailant wielding the exact same gun from her nightmares?

Balancing a clandestine love affair and a mounting list of suspects, Lane must figure out how the secrets of her past are connected to the city’s underground crime network—before someone pulls the trigger on the most explosive revenge plot in New York history . . .

Quote:
In the English village of Kurland St. Mary, few things are worse than having one’s reputation besmirched. A struggling marriage is one. Murder is another . . .

Three years have passed since Major Sir Robert Kurland and Lucy Harrington, the rector's daughter, became husband and wife. Having established a measure of contentment among the local gentry, the couple lately have found an unsettling distance grown between them. But when the small-village peace is disrupted by an anonymous letter accusing Lucy of witchcraft, her as yet unfulfilled desire to be a mother becomes the least of her worries, especially after she learns she is not the only one to have received such a malicious letter.

Speculation only escalates when the village schoolteacher, Miss Broomfield, is discovered murdered at her classroom desk. Was the unlikeable teacher the letter writer, and if so, who killed her and why? Despite her husband’s objections, Lucy offers to help out at the school until a replacement can be found, hoping the children might inadvertently reveal a clue, but by doing so she may be putting her own life at risk . . .
