The Siren and the Spectre & The Dark Game are both good. I am very much a middle of the road rating provider (3/5 stars meaning I liked it) but both of these titles I rated (4/5 'really liked it') on goodreads. Yes I know it's subjective but I feel that these titles exhibit enhanced writing/story telling. Janz is a good writer and seems to produce quite a lot of content. I have more titles in my TBR from him but we all know how that goes.

I am reading The Dark Game right now (E-book). I'm about 40% in, it's pretty good. I highly recommend Children of the Dark by him.

The Siren and the Spectre I had received as an ARC but did not get around to. I ordered it on the Paperback special to support the company and the author, who I follow on Twitter, and as a thank you for ARCs I am backlogged on. Also, cool cover lol

The Influence
Looks like a nice haul. If The Influence is Ramsey Campbell, I've read that one in the past and it was good. I believe Slash is being read a bit on Twitter lately and is supposed to be on the gross side but it's coming recommended. I still love physical books (hence my name lol), but I get it. These sales are pretty cheap right now since usually their trade paperbacks from small publishers are too pricey for me.

The Influence is a Flame Tree book. One of the ones I picked up on sale (though I use the original Tor cover, because that's how I roll).

The Influence film is available on Netflix. It's a thoroughly mediocre movie. Not recommended. But one of those ones where as I was watching, I was thinking 'I'll bet the book it's based on is really good.'

My copy was when it was with another publisher originally. An older story he may have updated, if its' the one I'm thinking of. I did see the movie and thought it was just okay, as you said, it's been years. The book was better and unsettling in a subtler, quieter tone.

Me too, I'm pretty behind!

Children of the Dark is excellent, but grim and dark - it's almost surreal and gets twisted the more you go into it. I've recommended it to a few friends over the years.

The Family Plot by Cherie Priest is $2.99 on Amazon.com
Quote:
Music City Salvage is owned and operated by Chuck Dutton: master stripper of doomed historic properties and expert seller of all things old and crusty. Business is lean and times are tight, so he’s thrilled when the aged and esteemed Augusta Withrow appears in his office. She has a massive family estate to unload—lock, stock, and barrel. For a check and a handshake, it’s all his.

It’s a big check. It’s a firm handshake. And it’s enough of a gold mine that he assigns his daughter Dahlia to personally oversee the project.

Dahlia and a small crew caravan down to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where the ancient Withrow house is waiting—and so is a barn, a carriage house, and a small, overgrown cemetery that Augusta Withrow left out of the paperwork.

Augusta Withrow left out a lot of things.

The property is in unusually great shape for a condemned building. It’s empty, but Dahlia and the crew quickly learn it is far from abandoned. There is still something in the Withrow mansion, something angry and lost, and this is its last chance to raise hell before the house is gone forever.

I hope it's not been updated at all (unless it were edited against his wishes when it was originally published or something).

The movie was just released in Rocktober 2019. Though with the way 2020's been going, that does feel like years ago.

It's definitely not the movie I'm thinking of, then

You know what?

I just looked it up after this post, and I'm thinking of his book/movie: The Nameless

I do own The Influence by him as well, though, just haven't read it.

How funny. I looked it up and there's been three Rasmey Campbell films. All made in Spain. All mediocre. Poor Ramsey!

I am a little curious to see that Spanish version of The Nameless.

Finished Nightscape last night. Still on sale for $0.99. I'd recommend it. It deserved a classier cover than the schlocky original (though that schlocky original is charming in its way).

I liked Stephen George and will buy and read more of his work. And his books are fairly priced at $3.99 each, so no need to wait on sales (not that I wouldn't take a deal).

Speaking of his covers, doesn't this modern cover for Torment just look like a typical teenage girl who's in one of those arguments with her parents where 'they just don't understand'? I imagine she's shouting "Moooooom!"

Started Children of the Dark by Jonathan Janz. I'm in the middle of Chapter Three.

Haha, you are right on the cover. I miss the old days when they cover design more as an actual art - although we got some cheesy stinkers back then too.

I went ahead and picked it up, hard to beat 99 cents

I checked my email to refresh me on which six I ordered from the Flame Tree Sale. No Ramsey Campbell, but I have several of his paperbacks already waiting to be read for years. I'm slow.

Jonathan Janz - The Siren and the Specter
Jonathan Janz - The Sorrows
Robin Triggs - Night Shift
Megan Hart - Black Wings
Hunter Shea - Slash
P.D. Cacek - Second Lives
