Luna format

Has anyone heard of a reflowable Kindle e-book format called Luna?

I came across it in a list of reflowable formats in the Kindle firmware released today, but I have never heard of it before.

I came across something related to this open question.

Kindle Editions with Audio-Video are delivered to Fire tablets with media file names that begin with "luna".

Perhaps Luna is an internal name for that variant of MOBI format.

The old...(I started to say Topaz, but...) no, that can't be it. These are old, largely. These are, for Trade Pubs, KF7 files. That's the format you're required to upload, if you have embedded a/v. Not upload, "transport" via FTP. As opposed to ePUB, which is what BPHs upload, largely. (not always).

When I started this thread I was curious whether Luna might refer to something new that we would need to look out for. Now I feel fairly certain that it refers to this old format instead.

I had thought that Kindle Editions with Audio-Video were defunct, so I was surprised to see that new books are still being published in that format. Strangely a lot of the new books published using the audio/video Kindle format are German soft core porn.

Chapter 14 (Creating Kindle Edition with Audio/Video Content) of the Kindle Publishing Guidelines has information on what the publisher is expected to provide to Amazon for these books.

Kindlegen changes up the coding a bit and Amazon splits out the media files and delivers them separately on the apps that support this format (Fire and iOS only).

Yes and there isn't much to it, really. Make a PRC (I know I can't be the only schlub here that still has an ancient KG CL around, or for that matter--gasp!--MBPC), or an ePUB2 with PRC-compatible code, (MOBI 7) and slap your stuff in there. There isn't any read-along functionality, as there is for iBooks, so the other files aren't required. It's actually pretty easy-peasy, other than not being able to achieve thorough testing.

kindlegen -c2 -verbose -gen_ff_mobi7 mybook.opf

As @Hitch pointed, I find that emailing to my iPad Kindle address or publishing via to KDP is rejected.

Where does one need to register for uploading, and to which amazon FTP service?

(This is only for personal publishing fun, I would be reluctant to $ign anything in blood )

Well, the problem is, you CANNOT test it. I thought I said that. You can try to load the .prc or mobi to KindlePreviewer, and you can then ask it to export an AZK file, which you would THEN sideload to your iPad via a wired connection and iTunes (use a search engine to find out what that entails), but as far as I know, that still would not display video or audio for you.

This is one of the reasons that KDP doesn't open up audio/video to amateur publishers, because it's not testable and all that. Again, you can try to see if the a/v plays, in Previewer (that's probably your best hope of seeing it); but the likelihood of it playing (via the MOBI-->KP-->AZK-->hard-wired Xfer via iTunes to iOS-->Kindle for iOS) is slim.

I hope that helps. I don't see how uploading it to KDP would help you, but you can TRY by going to: https://kdp.amazon.com/ , creating an account (no signatures in blood) and uploading it there and then trying to download the PREVIEW MOBI, at the relevant step in the 2nd section.
