Another freebie in this series, at both Kindle US and UK. Sorry, though, @ReadingManiac, no "Alchemist" in the title.

The Dragon of Handale, #5
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D42C2IY
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00D42C2IY

Spoiler:
Quote:
In the fifth in this stellar series Hildegard returns from pilgrimage to Compostela only to be sent by her Prioress to the remote and sinister Handale Priory. Used as a house of correction for sinning nuns, it lies in the north of the county in the middle of a vast wood and is run by the ambiguous Abbess Basilda and her close group of hard-faced acolytes. Hildegard discovers the corpse of a young man in the morgue and is told that the dragon of Handale has killed him. But Hildegard does not believe in dragons. Warned against walking in the woods sherefuses to be penned in like a prisoner and discovers a secret tower, locked and barred, with armed men on guard. What is so valuable that it needs a guard? Has it anything to do with the mystery of the young man's death? And why have assassins been pursuing the King's courier across the savage moorlandonly to murder him at a lonely wayside tavern? Hildegard risks all dangers to seek out the truth.

Snagged it anyway. If the series turns out to be good, I'd kick myself for missing the opportunity.

And Dragons are good too.

It's a historical series, and I'm a huge historical mystery fan. I'd put it at maybe 2/3 of the way up my list of series I like, or maybe even a bit higher. Definitely high enough up that I'm happy to see titles at good prices, although I already have several of the titles in the series.

But, of course, YMMV...

And of course...this is the mystery thread, not the sci-fi/fantasy thread, so somehow, I suspect the dragon isn't real ...or else maybe I should cross-post...

This series features octogenarian sleuth Myrtle Clover, whose son is a detective in the local cop force. I like the characters in this.

Now $0.99 at Kindle US, possibly in honor of a new title (new English translation, at least) coming out in July...

Not on sale at Kobo US, at least as of now.

Link below is still good.

I'm not much for series, but Pastor's about the conflicted Wehrmacht officer is an exception. This title just came out last month, so it's a fantastic deal.

Actually, despite being Italian, Ben Pastor writes in English and a translator translates the Bora books into Italian.

It’s very frustrating, as the Italian books come out sooner and there are more of them, which means the original English versions are done, but have a delayed and staggered release.

All of that said, I’m looking forward to the release of The Night of Shooting Stars this week; however, I can wait on a price drop. The current discounted price of $9.99 is still more than I’m willing to pay for this kind of book, much as I like this particular series.

Hopjoy Was Here is the third in the Flaxborough series by Colin Watson. It has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK.

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B079JBKWVK

Spoiler:
Quote:
The gripping sight of four burly policemen manhandling a bath down the front path of a respectable villa isn't one the residents of Flaxborough see every day.

Net curtains twitch furiously, and neighbours have observations to make to Chief Inspector Purbright and Sergeant Love about the inhabitants of 14, Beatrice Avenue. Nice Gordon Periam, the mild-mannered tobacconist, and his rather less nice (in fact a bit of a bounder) lodger Brian Hopjoy had apparently shared the house amicably.

But now neither man is to be found and something very disagreeable seems to be lurking in the drains… Then a couple of government spooks turn up, one with an eye for the ladies - the drama is acquiring overtones of a Bond movie!

Witty and a little wicked, Colin Watson's tales offer a mordantly entertaining cast of characters and laugh-out-loud wordplay.

I also note two other titles in this series semi-long-term at £0.99, the first (which is always kind of nice if you want to try it out) and the last (good, I guess, if you make it all the way through ).

Another big batch of Martin Cruz Smith titles have dropped to £0.99 each at Kindle UK. The link in the previous post still works. There are lots of duplicates, but if you need a title or two, it may be worth checking out.

Robert B. Parker's Killing the Blues is the first in Michael Brandman's continuation of Robert B. Parker's Jesse Stone series, which has had continuation novels published by three different authors. As I've said before, I'm sometimes not all that impressed by continuations, but I've thought the ones I've read by Brandman, and also those by Reed Farrell Coleman, were pretty good. (The single Mike Lupica title in this series is new, and isn't out until September.)

Anyway, Killing the Blues has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0054TVWIG
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/rob...ng-the-blues-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
It’s tourist season in Paradise, Massachusetts. With it comes a baffling and violent crime wave that has residents on edge. It’s also brought a mysterious figure who’s stirring up troubling memories for Chief of Police Jesse Stone—especially when it appears the stranger is out for revenge.

I read a few of those Pizza series books from the library. I recall them as being OK, not either terrible or great. They are the kind of small-town cozies where the woman restaurant owner annoys the local cop by getting mixed up with all the local murders. For me, they were OK as free library reads but I probably wouldn't buy them.
