A reading Nook is a good thing. Reading ON a Nook ????

I enjoy reading on my Nook. I bounce back and forth between my 2015 Plus and my Clara.

For other stuff (home screen, collection management, series), the software isn't as good as Kobo. But actually reading a book, it is good for me.

I don't think there is a "best" really. Each person has their opinion on which format of ebooks is best and therefore on what devices are best. It's very much a beholder's choice I think. i.e. whichever works 'best' for the individual.

I agree. The hardware for most is similar, so the difference is the software. I want the flexibility that an open system provides, and is why I am looking at the Onyx Poke 2 (6 inch Screen) and the Onyx Boox Nova 2 (7.8 inch screen). With these e-readers you can install any e-reader or library app from the google play store.

For me, these would be the best......

Not any as there is no Reader using the latest version of Android and if any Reader app or Library app needs a later Android then your device has, then nope.

I used to think that would be a good idea. But then those e-reader and library apps aren't going to be configured to play well with an e-ink screen. And running full Android makes the batteries not last as long.

Since I can sideload books, I've decided to pick the reader who's software I like the most and not worry about apps.

If libraries were a concern for me, living in the US I would pick a Kobo or Kindle.

This is theoretical gibberish.
There is currently no single app that requires a higher Android version.

I'm not so worried about the app requirements as the simple fact that older Android versions have security holes that will not be fixed. I tried a couple of exploits on a Tolino epos and they worked so I feel rather paranoid about enabling WiFi on it.

I certainly don't do banking with a Tolino.

They are running Android Version 9

I think that's pretty current.

I think you're mixing local privilege escalation with some sort of remote exploit. These devices are fine to connect to wifi or even to surf the internet if you avoid the stock browser and use an updated alternative. https://www.bromite.org/ is available for 4.4, which I think Tolinos are using.

If you're talking about local privilege escalation then my home router has one (like most SOHO equipment) and I obviously connect it to the internet.

Fun fact: a few years ago most home routers here in Europe were shipped with an "administrative port" open (telnet ). They offered a slimmed down command line interface with a few options. It was possible to escape the "sandbox" just by using one of these commands with an invalid argument. I remember that typing
Code:
ifconfig wooooh | /bin/sh
was all I need to get a root shell. Things are now better than that, but not that much.

At home, I'm not worried since I am moderately paranoid about keeping up with security issues and my wireless connects through a firewall to get to the ISP's device. What does cause me worry is basic services such as DNS and DHCP with security issues in settings where I do not have that control. So if I am in one of the local coffee shops (which are now busily reopening with fewer tables) and someone has hacked their network gear, simply connecting and getting a DHCP address is a security hazard. See CVE-2014-6060, CVE-2014-7912, CVE-2014-7913 and CVE-2016-1503 for DHCP issues. You may not feel a touch of paranoia when reading phrases such as "which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer overflow) via a malformed DHCP response".

I mention coffee shops since one local coffee shop was still using the default credentials for their wireless setup despite having been pwned a couple of times. They now have a non-default user name and password and a bit more secure setup. Who knows, they may discover that one day.

Agreed. I can't even come up with a favorite in my own eReaders. Seems like I like whatever one I happen to be using. But, since I don't use Windows and can't install Adobe ADE, the PocketBook and Tolino are probably the ones that will get most of my use (except when I'm reading a .mobi book).

I saw some of the videos showing Android apps on the Nook Simple Touch (way back when) and thought, "gee, that looks like... 'garbage.'" I decided if I wanted a tablet I would just get a tablet. An eReader, to me, is something different. Simpler, more direct.
