An Open Road title or two seem to go on sale at reasonable prices in the UK about once a month, at least for authors that I have eRiq'd. This is as opposed to about once a minute in the US .

Anyway, now here is the fifth in Catherine Aird's excellent IMO CD Sloan/Constable Crosby series, His Burial Too, at £1.99 at Kindle UK. This is one of my top five favorite mystery series...

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00USNEWYO

Spoiler:
Quote:
Detective Inspector C. D. Sloan puzzles over an industrialist crushed under the rubble of a church tower in this crime novel by a CWA Diamond Dagger winner.

On the hottest day in living memory, Richard Mallory Tindall, the owner of a patent firm, does not return home to Cleete village. When a man is found crushed to death, Tindall’s case goes from missing person to homicide.

In the course of solving murder cases, Detective Inspector C. D. Sloan has seen all manner of ugly death. But there’s something particularly gruesome about this one, the body crushed beneath the marble and iron of an old Saxon church tower. With rubble blocking off access to the crime scene, no one can get close enough to inspect the body. What little evidence is available—a burned match, a black thread, an earring—doesn’t bode well for a quick and easy solution.

Even the legendarily cool-headed great detective might begin to crack when a second body turns up. And then an important file goes missing from Sloan’s office. How does it all connect?

The Alchemist of Netley Abbey is the eighth in the Hildegard of Meaux series by Cassandra Clark. I've read and enjoyed several of the titles in this series. It is FREE right now at Kindle US and UK. Some of the other titles in the series are pretty reasonably priced too (although some seem to not be available in the US), so you're not left hanging if you like the freebie...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0713QZSXN
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0713QZSXN

Spoiler:
Quote:
Desperate to return home to Meaux after the traumatic events in London and Salisbury, intrepid nun, Hildegard, and her charismatic but untouchable abbot, Hubert de Courcy, set out with their two monks militant through the New Forest on the long journey north at last.
Fate, however, intervenes.

Even before they escape the labyrinthine paths of the Royal Forest Hubert is in need of urgent medical attention and they are forced to seek shelter at the mysterious Netley Abbey. Although welcomed inside the precincts, all is not as it seems. A motley group of pilgrims are waiting to take ship to France. Guests secretly come and go. Who are they? Are they spies, assassins, or something even more threatening to the safety of King Richard’s realm? And why are they here in this remote and beautiful place?

A Welsh alchemist reputed to have mysterious powers adds his own sinister desires to the brew and when a valuable book disappears and two deaths follow, who is to blame?

As usual Hildegard is entangled in a web of intrigue and defies all dangers to discover the truth.

Easy way to pique my interest in a book: use the word Alchemist in the title.
Grabbed it, though it looks like I'm in the middle of a long series.

The Moneychangers By Arthur Hailey $1.99 Amazon, Kobo & B&N
Amazon: https://smile.amazon.com/Moneychange...s%2C590&sr=8-1
Kobo: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-moneychangers-14

Quote:
**The #1 bestselling author of the blockbuster thrillers Airport and Hotel takes on the world of high finance: “**Cliched, lurid and utterly absorbing” (Philip Hensher, The Guardian).

Ben Roselli, president of First Mercantile American Bank and grandson of the founder, makes the shocking announcement that he’s dying. With no offspring to inherit the company, Roselli knows that executive VPs Roscoe Heyward and Alex Vandervoort are the obvious candidates to succeed him. Heyward, who has been with First Mercantile for two decades, will do whatever it takes to bring in new clients and win the coveted presidency. Vandervoort, a newcomer from the Federal Reserve with a left-wing girlfriend, advocates for a socially responsible plan of growth. And now the discovery of counterfeit cash and credit card fraud threatens the future of the bank itself.

From the day-to-day business dealings to the inner sanctums of the money trading center and the boardroom, Hailey’s novel is a riveting tale of ambition, greed, and the US banking system.

I shared this in the horror thread, but it's being marketed as a historical thriller. Either way, it sounds pretty good:

The Night Crossing by Robert Masello is $0.99 at Amazon US

Quote:
Bram Stoker kept secret a tale even more terrifying than Dracula.

It begins among the Carpathian peaks, when an intrepid explorer discovers a mysterious golden box. She brings it back with her to the foggy streets of Victorian London, unaware of its dangerous power…or that an evil beyond imagining has already taken root in the city.

Stoker, a successful theater manager but frustrated writer, is drawn into a deadly web spun by the wealthy founders of a mission house for the poor. Far from a safe haven, the mission harbors a dark and terrifying secret.

To save the souls of thousands, Stoker—aided by the explorer and a match girl grieving the loss of her child—must pursue an enemy as ancient as the Saharan sands where it originated. Their journey will take them through the city’s overgrown graveyards and rat-infested tunnels and even onto the maiden voyage of the world’s first “unsinkable” ship…

Today's Amazon.co.uk Big Deal is 18 books from Andrea Camilleri's Commisario Montalbano series:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/b?node=4725112031

It includes the following:

#4: The Voice of the Violin
#5: Excursion to Tindari
#6: The Scent of the Night
#7: Rounding the Mark
#9: The Paper Moon
#10: August Heat
#11: The Wings of the Sphinx
#12: The Track of Sand
#14: The Age of Doubt
#15: The Dance of the Seagull
#16: The Treasure Hunt
#17: Angelica's Smile
#18: Game of Mirrors
#19: Blade of Light
#20: A Voice in the Night
#21: A Nest of Vipers
#22: The Pyramid of Mud
#23: The Overnight Kidnapper

Note that many of these are repeats; new (to me today) were #18, #19 and #23, and #22 turned up earlier this week so may be new to others. That now means only the last 4 in the series haven't yet been reduced; #24 & #25 have been translated, #26 is not yet released, & #27 isn't available in English yet.

The High Window is the third in the Philip Marlowe series by Raymond Chandler. The Random House edition (presumably legit) is $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US right now. If you're not lucky enough to live in/visit Canada, this is a great price for a Chandler title in the US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FBFM5C
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-high-window-4

Spoiler:
Quote:
Crime fiction master Raymond Chandler's third novel featuring Philip Marlowe, the "quintessential urban private eye" (Los Angeles Times).

A wealthy Pasadena widow with a mean streak, a missing daughter-in-law with a past, and a gold coin worth a small fortune—the elements don't quite add up until Marlowe discovers evidence of murder, rape, blackmail, and the worst kind of human exploitation.

There seems to be lots of bootleg Chandler on Amazon, but this is the legit, above-board book.

Yep, I think there is a lot of bootleg Chandler on Amaz US because he's PD in Canada, at least until NAFTA 2, so I think folks grab it, and then repackage to list on Amaz US...

But as you said, this is the legit one, and only rarely does RH put Chandler on sale in the US.
