Hisense Q5 Tablet hands on video (in Chinese)

Looks like the Hisense Q5 has been released in China. It is amazing to see from the video how fast the screen refresh rate is as it can play videos without hiccups. The background looks as white if not whiter than a standard E-ink display. The screen also seems to have a much better grayscale. I wish this tablet supported pen input. Think about how a tablet with this screen technology would let you use any note-taking app in the Google play store unlike an e-ink device in which you are limited to the built-in note-taking app. I'm hoping that it will soon become a reality in a year or two. I'm also wondering if this RLCD technology will pose a serious threat to e-ink. It is unlikely that e-ink will have this fast screen refresh rate anytime soon.

This is interesting, but the technology is not exactly new though, is it? I remember the Gameboy used reflective LCDs as well. (Pocket Calculators would be another popular example.)

Possible downside could be a worse battery life, since RLCD constantly draws power, not just at screen refreshes like e-ink. Another question would be how reflective is RLCD compared to e-ink (how high the contrast)? How good are the viewing angles? (I think at the beginning of the video, when she is holding the tablet at various angles, you can see that the screen gets quite dark as soon as the light does not shine directly onto it.) |

Is this actually as comfortable as e-ink for reading? By that I mean does it feel as though you are staring at a screen or a piece of paper like with e-ink readers?

Goodereader also published a hands-on video of the new Hisense Q5.

Yeah, there might be bad lighting or weird camera settings, but the display does not look that nice in the Goodereader video as well. At least it looks a bit darker then an e-ink screen.

![]() Again the viewing angles are not great. Goodereader even speaks of color distortions when viewed at an angle. Also what I just noticed, the Hisense does not seem to have any built-in light at all, not even a front light. |

Couple that with a light-emitting layer on top and you have a winner... (maybe also laminate everything and etch some matte layer directly onto the glass front panel).

And goodereader's reporting it's already been discontinued.

Take that with a grain of salt though. |
