ZodWallop (interesting handle, is there a story behind it?),
When I use Kindle for PC & Mac DeDRM is unable to locate & automatically load the Key. So currently my only way to convert the Amazon file is the USB option using the Kindle. Hopefully I can sell my Oasis to someone else on MobileReads so it doesn’t go to waste!
Thanks,
Also from Deep in the Heart of Texas!

You can use Kindle for PC and the DeDRM plug-in will pull the key from there.
Ok, thanks. I thought I'd read here that a kindle was needed. I remember someone recommending that a person buy a cheap one from ebay in order to get the serial number.

You need to use an older version of Kindle for PC.
I believe that 1.24 is the last version that works.
I have version 1.24.3 (51068) and it works with the calibre DRM plugin with no issues. You can google that version number to find download links.
You don't have to configure the plugin, or enter any serial numbers, it just works.
Every now and then you'll have to update the plugin as Amazon fiddle with things in the eBooks.
I have DeDRM 6.7.0 and KFX Input 1.31.0, and they have worked on every book I've bought so far.

That's for those Mac users who have the newest OS, Catalina. You can't install an old version of Kindle for Mac on Catalina. The new versions don't work as far as de-DRMing goes. So the simplest way for them is to use a cheap eink kindle and its serial number.

Windows users or those on an older Mac OS can install an old version of Kindle for PC/Mac.

Zod Wallop is the name of a book I read and enjoyed years ago. Plus, the Z and W make it fun to say.

And the author's a Texan.

Ah, I'm not familiar with Mac. On Windows, it's all automated.

I don't have my Surface with Calibre in front of me. But can't you search for the key in the configure plug-in area? You might not be able to. I honestly don't remember.

I'd guess the OP is using the newest version of Kindle for Mac. That's not going to work. They need an old version, as has already been mentioned.

On Windows at least, you can install any version of Kindle for PC. I use version 1.17 because that's the last one where Amazon gives you .azw files instead of KFX.

KFX just seems like too much of a headache to deal with. Though I guess if Amazon ever decides to drop 1.17, I'll have some learning to do.

FileHippo and OldVersion have links for previous editions of Kindle for PC. Kindle for Mac seems much more scarce. I wonder why?

Some of these posts are skirting the line and at least one is definitely over the line in terms of providing detailed help with DRM removal. The line may be blurry, but it is there. Members are asked to be circumspect in response to requests for help; general comments and links to Alf’s blog are fine, but people should be directed to Alf’s page for more specific help. Thanks.

The new Kobo Forma arrived and the Calibre conversion of Amazon purchased books worked as advertised. Thanks to all of the support from MobileRead! I am running Catalina on my iMac, so I have to figure out a work around the serial number issue so that I can sell my Oasis 2.
On a side note I didn’t see many options on 3rd party Forma covers. I had a very nice leather cover from an Etsy business called Hand & Hide for my Oasis. It is High Quality leather, the kind that requires a break-in period and gains character the longer you have it. I reached out to Hand & Hide. They are going to make me a cover for the new Forma! They are not cheap, but in my experience you get what you pay for. I have had my share of cheap leather eReader covers. The feel of quality leather and of course a glass of wine adds to the reading experience!

Hey, very nice! Enjoy your new Forma.

Be sure to head over to the Kobo section if you need any advice. From experience, you will likely get more than you wanted and any question will spark a debate on the best way to do things

Well, of course. If there is one thing I've noticed in the years I've been around these forums, it is that if you ask 4 MobileRead members for an opinion, you will get at least 6 different ones.

I have long been addicted to ereaders -- I have the smaller oasis and also the latest oasis 2 (in which the screen can be yellowed). i had given up on Kobo readers because Amazon seemed easier to have on different readers, synchronizing the book I was reading. Still, I couldn't resist getting the Kobo Forma. I find it's by far the best ereader I have ever used. The big screen, the way it slowly yellows at night, and the software are all far preferable (for me) to what I was used to on the kindle. By the way, there seems to be a new dedrm that works with Calibre and the latest Mac Kindle app (which runs in Catalina).

I'm a bit late to the game, having just now read your post. If you love quality covers like I do (even though you just purchased one), you might also take a look at Noreve. They're in France and their covers are superb. They pay for the shipping to most places. Here's their website:
