I only tested word count (because that's all I use), but this version worked fine for me in both on Win10 4.14(64bit) and 4.99.5(portable).

Thanks!

Calibre Family - Apparently I am getting something wrong. I have installed and configured the "Count Pages" plugin as directed but it looks like I am getting word count. It will show up like 113,000 then I "count" again and it displays a correct page count. Anyone have any suggestions on what is happening?

Check your configuration .
You may have set BOTH word and page to the SAME custom column. (you do not need to use all the options. Just set those back to <blank>

Do I understand right the Calibre viewer has it's own algorithm and won't be affected by this plugin?

That is correct. The viewer is only looking at the actual book. And doesn't use custom columns in any way.

Count Pages has been a nice discovery for me to get word counts onto books for Kobo devices. Thanks!

Is the only way to get the printed book page total for a given book to enter the Goodreads ID (manually or in the Edit Metadata window by downloading metadata) before running Count Pages on that book?

Or figure out if the viewer has some way to override it's internal mechanism, patching in get_page_count_adobe??

I could probably figure it out being a dev but not sure I care enough. I've come around to realize after trying Adobe digital, FBReader, Calibre viewer, the Goodreads site (page total). They are all different. Calibre viewer being consistently high compared to Goodreads, sometimes double.

I find the plugin very handy, and has cleared up my confusion about the Calibre reader, that it has an internal page count algorithm. I kept expecting to find a setting to change it but I see there isn't one.

If anybody cares to work on this plugin further, my suggestions:

Plugin has multiple non-algorithm sources: Goodreads, Skoob. Skoob is interesting because it seems to match Amazon's Kindle page count, for me in English, despite the language difference.

Multiple algorithmic calculations: ADE, APNX, Calibre.

All these go into a single column. I'd like to see a way to define multiple.

Also it was unclear to me what the "other" and "statistics" tabs meant. Now I see one is an algorithm, and one is from a site. Maybe change those tabs to "algorithm" and "site".

I have considered that. Change the plugin so that each possible statistic is stored separately. But, it is enough work, that I'm not that interested in doing it. Or ran out of other things to do. And, honestly, only one of each number is really needed.

Half of the "Other" tab is not site related. Changing it would obscure that fact.

And for the record, original creator of this plugin stopped maintaining them some years ago. I have been maintaining and extending it since as it is a plugin I use frequently. But, if someone else wants to do some work on it, I am very happy for them do so.

Don't look at me, I'm more unmotivated that you

I'm not going to concern myself anymore with Calibre reader's page counts. Koreader on my Kobo dynamically adjusts page count based on font size, line spacing, etc. That is my primary reader, and by chance, I happened to settle on a font size that happens to come out close to the print editions, so I never thought much about it. Nor would I care much but I do like knowing when I start a book approximately how large it is.

It was Calibre reader being consistently so far off that I finally decided to figure out what was up with it, leading me here.

If Calibre reader worked as the Kobo, rather than a baked in formula, I never would have questioned it.

On the plus side, this plugin really is nice to have, unexpectedly, so the trail of confusion ended in a benefit

How to count pages is one of the ongoing discussions here. It comes up most weeks in one form or another. I try to stay out of it, as it is almost a religious argument. None of the most common ways make any attempt to match the the paper book. Epubs can have a page mapping that can map back to a specific edition. Kindles have some sort of method as well. But, most use an artificial method, or a per-screen method. The calibre viewer doesn't attempt to simulate anything else. I've looked at it's page counting, but, I've forgotten the details.

For some reason I'm also having it be hit or miss since updating plugins/Calibre today.

It will grab the page number from goodreads on some of the books but not all. I've got goodreads metadata correctly input in the IDs section, run 'count pages', it finishes and just nothing happens sometimes. Not getting any errors or anything either, just the page count doesn't get added.
