Because it’s easier to price them down for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Black Friday, etc and snag a slightly smaller profit than to invest in a very niche feature which would increase costs and diminish device sales.

It would never work for my husband and I to share an e-reader. We basically read at the same time. If for some reason we were down to just one reader to use, one of us would use their phone or iPad.

My Kindle is not something I would want to "share" anymore than my cell phone is.

A user with the technical know how to set up different user profiles is a user who would have other devices that could used for digital books. The type of reader who buys a dedicated e-reader isn't going to want to share.

I will say I really dislike the way Nook implemented it.

Nook used to have a 'return to current reading' button in the upper left corner.

That way no matter where you were, pages deep in settings or lost in your library, you could always return to your current book with a single tap. It was like a reminder that this is a machine built for reading.

Now that button has been replaced by the accounts button.
Currently Reading is now on the home screen. Still easy enough to reach since Nooks have a Home button (must be inherited from those Chinese brands they copy). But I never use 'Accounts' whereas I use 'return to current read' often. It was a dumb change to make.

Seems to be per book now based on the last book opened.

So just keep one book you’ve read in your collection, open it, then open the new book.

Of course this still ignores that multiple users per device is an undesired feature for most people. Two companies have it, and have had it for years, none of the others have bothered implementing it. This in a world where there’s at least some version of a feature across most devices. Nook being the oddball of Kindle/Kobo/Nook who remain the only device not to allow you to load your own fonts.

I'm not a "set it and forget it" reader. I make changes depending on my eyes, where I'm sitting/laying, etc. I have no ONE perfect setting.

It is odd that nook don't do fonts.What I'm wondering about nook is does the latest firmware have better font handling The nook STR is awful at font handling.

Yes, actually, the Kindle has that now. It's called a THEME. Name your Theme. On my shared 7th gen with bro, it has Steph and Mike. If I was reading and now Mike wants to read, he just presses theme Mike it it switches to his settings. I don't know what the limit is but if you have more than 1 THEME, an option appears at the bottom to manage your themes.

If you mean books, of course Collections can help you with that. For my setup, I have Steph's Cookbooks in one collection and Mom's Cookbooks in another.
