Right now Amazon is probably short handed during the Corona Virus problems. So they're missing some stuff.

I placed an order last week that qualifies for 2 day shipping. They said it would be here this week, about 5 days later not counting weekends. Two days before it was due to arrive I received a notice that it would be delayed until the day it was due to arrive, which it was. So it arrived a day earlier than I was told along with apologies for being late.

In the past many years that I've had Prime shipping they've rarely been late. They've done their job beautifully. I don't think I'm going to hold it against them that they're getting a few things wrong during an epidemic.

However, for Amazon haters this probably is a joyous time.

By the way, I downloaded the 5.1.24 firmware and installed it on one of my Paperwhites. I had absolutely no problems with it. I've since installed 5.1.25 and installed it and I've had no problems with it. It's true that I do most of my reading on a phone these days so I can't say I've thoroughly tested it but I've played with it more than a little bit looking for problems and haven't found any.

Amazon should just repackage 5.12.4 for the PW3 and rename it 5.12.5 so people like JSwolf are happy.

PW3 isn't receiving new features, get over it.

It still works 100% as intended during purchase. EOL would mean they cut access to Amazon servers or something that would effect the end user.

Stop trying to say what what emd-of-life is as you are getting incorrect information.

The PW3 is stuck on the buggy 5.12.4 due to a cock-up by Amazon. 5.12.4 was supposed to have been pulled and it wasn't correctly because it was left on the OTA server. Amazon owes it to the PW3 owners to get them 5.12.5. If Amazon had not botched the release of 5.12.4, then you could say get over it that the PW3 is not getting any new features. But you cannot leave the PW3 on buggy firmware that it was not supposed to have gotten.

Except nobody is reporting any bugs. I've seen a couple people complain about battery drain, but people were also saying the same about 5.12.3

5.12.4 is perfect, you're just sad you don't get the lastest firmware number.

And yes many people are reporting bugs with 5.12.5 already !!
5.12.5 would introduce as many bugs as it would fix

I dont understand why you don't realize this.

I don't believe he is a kindle user, so he is objecting on the principle that Amazon released an update that caused bugs for some users on the PW3, but then pulled the firmware update, leaving some with less stable devices through no fault of the customer. That's not cool of a vendor of any product to do. Hopefully Amazon is working on a release that fixes issues if enough people are reporting them.

As to bugs, some are reporting slow down and freezing, battery drain, or other weird quirks. Here is just one place in the comments where people post software issues they're having with PW3, 4, or Oasis - some due to the update, some not. It seems people don't mention it on this particular forum much, but if you go to other sources some are reporting issues. I haven't been using my PW3 for awhile but believe - if memory serves me correctly - it *may* have updated. I hope not since it's removed and I don't need more bugs. I'll have to check later, not near it right now.

As to myself, I've been having bugs for about a year with my e-readers, so I get the point of the article title, Are Kindles becoming more prone to software issues? Yes, I know not everyone has problems, and good for them, but I've been frustrated for awhile now by all this.

Exactly! Those same bugs are still being reported in 5.12.5

That update didn't "fix" those issues.

There have been bug reports like this for almost every update released.

He's under the impression that Amazon discovered the exact issue, and patched it in 5.12.5, and then didn't apply it to the PW3. This is far from reality.

You don't get it. Amazon pulled 5.12.4 from download because something is wrong with it. Amazon didn't pull 5.12.4 from the OTA servers when they should have. So lots of people ended up with 5.12.4 when they should not have. 5.12.4 should have been fully pulled and it wasn't. Now Amazon is ignoring the PW3 whch may be stuck on 5.12.4 and if 5.12.4 is still on the OTA server for the PW3, even more may someday end up with 5.12.4.

So if 5.12.4 is so wonderful, why did Amazon pull it from downloads?

Kobo has pulled firmware due to something wrong with it. Kobo replaces that firmware with another version fairly soon after for ALL devices that were able to install the pulled firmware. Amazon should do the same.

Who said Amazon isn't working on a fix?

Covid19 = more than half of their software team isn't even at work right now.

You keep making stuff up with 0 evidence. 0 source.

You just KNOW they pulled it because of battery drain!!!!!

We know Amazon botched 5.12.4. And then botched 5.12.5 for the PW3.

What we don't know yet is what they plan to do about it when they have the manpower to do something. But, of course, this has already been suggested a number of times. I'd like you to respond to it. Does that possibility, the pandemic, the change of priorities it's caused for the moment, change your point of view? If not, why not?

I'm not buying a delay due to the pandemic personally. A lot of tech have been working remotely and I don't see Amazon forced to do many top-tier layoffs since their business has still been steady. People have been ordering online in such high volumes they even had to slow down shipping.

You and jswolf keep sharing opinions without any data to back it.

There are multiple reports from AWS and Amazon software employees that they are short staffed currently.

I'd link the sources, but what's the point? You guys hate facts.

I was pointing out they have not been hurt by the pandemic, and in fact have soared business wise. According to this article, of which I browsed as one of many, "Amazon is positioned to be one of the biggest beneficiaries of the broader collapse in retail, as it attracts new customers who are stuck at home and are now turning to the platform for essential goods." They also reported an increase in Amazon Prime as people need to ship more goods. If they are shorthanded in a department, with their increase of profits and business, I do not feel it's from the pandemic. And yes, there are facts that help form this opinion. -

I will say that the points that they may be working on it, and it just may not be released yet, are valid. If they come out with an updated version that fixes those stucks with any glitches and bugs, great. If not, that's beyond frustrating.
