It might help to set a slow_down_sleep_time setting in personal.ini to increase the wait time between network requests--many sites will start blocking you if you are downloading 'too much'.

I was adding info for a new metadata column by using the update existing fics > update metadata from saved metadata column. However, I got a "you need to login to view this story" popup for a few AO3 ones. Is this supposed to happen?

EDIT: I should mention that the column did update even though I pressed cancel.

That should only happen if a particular story didn't have saved metadata--FFF will automatically go get it in that case--and you have always_login:true or that story does need login, and you don't have AO3 user/pass saved in personal.ini.

If you can duplicate the problem, I'd like to hear how and with what story(s).

I checked and the fics in question did not have a saved metadata column. What I thought was it updating a #wordcount column was actually the Count Pages plugin (which was set to add a word count if it didn't find one in the metadata). Sorry!

I usually can figure out at least sort of where I messed up, but I am officially at a loss here. It just suddenly stopped populating my Ships column when downloading from AO3. The column is populated by #mainship. I am going to include my entire ini here (which is a bit of a behemoth, sorry), because I have no idea what is going on.
Unfortunately it looks like it's been doing this for awhile and I just didn't notice somehow so isolating exactly what change messed stuff up is giving me trouble and running in debug isn't showing anything wonky. As a matter of a fact I'll also include the debug log.

My INI is here and the debug log is here.

Since you didn't provide an example story URLs, I'm only going to look at one semi-random example I picked and stop when it works.

You have:

include_in_ships:pairings

Which discards the collected value of standard metadata ships for extra metadata pairings--and pairings is empty. So that's completely broken.

I suggest removing pairings entirely, you aren't doing anything with it I can see.

(You also discard genre and populate it with category, BTW. Whatever, your choice.)

You have:

Which means those are the only strings that will be included in mainship.

You have sort_ships:true which conflicts with many of the mainship filters above. Fox Mulder/Dana Scully sorts to Dana Scully/Fox Mulder and doesn't pass for example.

Thank you so much! This gave me a better understanding of what is going on and where I was going wrong there. I was able to clean up my ini quite a bit and everything is working like it should. You're awesome

Tucked away on my hard drive I found a bunch of fanfics downloaded with the standalone FFDL as pdf files (yuck, what was I thinking). So I'm adding them to Calibre in small batches and letting FFF download proper ePubs for them.

I managed to get FFF to fetch the story urls from the file by converting the files to text. However is there any way to automatically update the url identifiers instead of copying and pasting them in? Thanks.

There’s a setting in FFF config Basic tab for something like “search inside epub“ and if you do An update with that on, FFF will populate the identity field.

As long as you don’t have that field set “new only” under the Standard Columns FFF settings tab.

Another thing that you can do, of course, is to just get the story urls and add them as new story urls.

You can turn on the populate the FFF error column setting, but that’s all that comes to mind.
