seriously: when I bought my first ereader, a Paperwhite 3, I chose a Kindle because it simply was the most widespread used. I was a novice so I thought that it could be easier to find help respect than other ereder.

When I bought the KA1 the only thing I was really interested was the larger screen. All the nice things about Kobo, and also some that I like least, I discovered later.

Neither device is my ideal ereder but that chimera does not exist. And if somebody has a Kindle may he can't afford the expense for buying another ereder also if there are some things he would change in his Kindle. Or simply may be that someone don't want to become a device collector.

I know for some, the Kindle may be a better choice. But for those on MR who complain about features Kindle doesn't have and Kobo does, why do you not have a Kobo?
For the case of a book cover as a screensaver vs whispersync, probably because they did the math and found that while they'd like the screensaver, whispersync is more important to them.

This applies to every feature on either device that the other lacks and is solely dependent on the person buying the device to rank in importance.

I like that I can use the patches from here to tweak my reading experience, that's an important feature for me. I don't read on multiple devices so whispersync is meaningless to me. I recognize that for someone else those positions may be reversed. Neither of would be wrong, and we would both be right.

Then why is it that a number of people come here to try to get the Kindle jailbroken to add features that Kobo already has?

I do have multiple books on the go. I have a book on my iPhone SE and a book on my H2O. They are not the same book and I don't mind at all. I don't have a need for syncing my reading position as I only have one active eInk Reader.

Probably because, as has been stated, the features they prioritize as most important are on the Kindle while the features they would also like can be achieved through jailbreaking. This is not a hard concept to grasp. We all want different features and we want them to varying levels.

I’d love it if Kobo dropped the sub 8” lines and produced a Forma 2 which improved the lighting, had a base 32gb storage with SD card, used USB C, I could go on. However there are people who would hate that device even though they may like Kobos software. Neither I nor these hypothetical people would agree on all the hardware specs. And none of us would be wrong for getting the device we felt best fit our needs.

That’s great. Other people do. Thus for them the feature is important.

I would love to see a 7" and 8" Aura H2O with mark 7 hardware and 32GB storage, larger battery, and faster processor. I like the design of the original H2O. As for dropping the smaller Readers, I would stick with a 6" model because some do like a smaller screen so the can break it in their pocket.

Hey, if we're building our fantasy Kobo, I'd like the original 6" Aura, with orange frontlight, waterproofing and a current gen 300 PPI screen.

That's why I like 6" readers. Every time I use it, I just hope the screen breaks

The Libra is pretty much my fantasy Kobo, I don't really need anything else hardware-wise. But they should fix their epub and kepub renderers (better typography with kepubs and allow image zooming plus overall speed improvement with epubs).

On balance, I think my H2O2 is as close to my ideal as I can expect. I don't read comics so 8GB is fine, The shape means it still fits in most of my pockets (even in its origami case), and since I couldn't give a continental about the æsthetics of ligatures, I'm ok with kepub typesetting. Close enough really is good enough

The idea of "jailbreaking" is to add customizing to personalize for the individual or go back to a previous OS version. "PATCHING" is also a form of customizing and/or fixing the OS.

So why is there so much 'patching'? & why are people looking for the patch to display current time while reading; something the Kindle already has. My 'patching' is just with ksm09 for the addition of the koreader; perhaps my KA1 LE problems are related to not enough patches.

I keep waiting for mine to break. I carry it all over, carried my Paperwhite 1 for 7+ years, and now my Clara, often in my pocket, loose in backpacks, in bicycle panniers, etc. I even carried the Paperwhite in my front hoodie pocket once and it fell out while I was foraging and I had to backtrack to find it. The Kindle 3 I didn't carry in my pocket, it was too big, but did sandwich it between my arm and torso quite a few times when carrying a plate of food at a restaurant.

No matter how hard I try, they haven't broken it yet -- darn stubborn things.

I have a feeling that if Kobo was to update RMSDK to the current version that there would be no need for Access (KePub). I would be very much OK with that. I mostly read ePub because of all the things wrong with Access.

Jailbreaking requiring taking advantage of security flaws in the firmware. Amazon is closing those. So that's not possible with Kindles with new enough firmware.

As for Kobo, patching is something that's not requiring any security holes. Kobo leaves the firmware pretty much open. That's why Calibre can manage eBooks much better with Kobo. All Calibre can do with a Kindle (no jailbrek) is send the book to the storage.

People ask for things because they may be able to be done with Kobo. Where you can't do anything with a Kindle that's not jailbroken and even then what you can do is a lot more limited.

I've never carried any Reader in any pocket. But I have carried them about in my backpack, and various bags. I always use a cover and I've never broken the screen. But then I make sure when I do put my Reader in my bag or backpack that there is enough room and not too much stuff that could apply too much force.

Jon,

Do you use Calibre to manage your ebooks? How do you send to Kobo (via calibre) without convert to kepub?

Using the kobo extended driver the conversion isn't automatically?

I want to try the epub format but want to send via calibre, it's possible?
