Oh, I got that. I would still prefer the cell phone photo over a new cover. I'm willing to be that they had no other version of the original cover.

The new cover is a paperback cover with lighting to try to hide the price.

Maybe. But they could have had Jimmy the intern dig up a copy that wasn't warped, scan it and clean it up in Photoshop.

It's not like there's a ton of books out there with these awful scans as the cover. Steel Beach feels like a slip in quality control rather than a chance to save a few pennies.

I like the concern everyone has towards the book cover (which I think is only on Amazon's website - the ebook file uses the black and white title page as the cover), and no one is wondering if it means the book was digitized using OCR and has terrible typos.
From my cursory glances, it looks fine.

Correction: the ebook file on your Kindle uses the black and white title page as the cover.

If you use any reader other than a Kindle, you will see the book cover on the reader. And on a Kobo, it's the screensaver.

The point of going on about the cover is this is a book that is popular enough to remain in print nearly twenty years after publication, written by an established author and put out by one of the Big 5. If that's the attention they paid, what else is going on?
