How to start Calibre for macOS in debug mode

I guess, there must be some combination of keys I have to press while starting my Calibre 4.17 for macOS, so that it starts in debug mode.
(1) Which is that keys combination?
(2) Where will the debug log file be saved?

In my present situation, my Calibre goes into an endless loop as soon as I click on Preferences, and has to be force-quit.

Thank you, Peter. I had already seen that page, but, as far as I understand, this debugging is only (or mainly) for developers.
My problem is, that my standard Callibre 4.17 for macOS goes into an endless loop as soon as I click on Preferences, and I have no choice, but force-quit it. I was thinking, that more knowledgeable people who might want to help me, would like to see some log file.
Am I wrong to think that the debug function is the one which produces such a log file?

See calibre-debug in Command Line Interface - it has an ignore-plugins switch.

To activate debug mode, I don't know if the mac will be the same keys, I could try ctrl+ shift+R

In my Terminal, I am in my user folder. To which folder should I go, before trying

calibre --ignore-plugins

?
I guess,

cd /Users/kovid/work/calibre

is merely an example, but all this is not so helpful. Probably I should mention that I am on a macOS 10.14.6 machine.
I have already tried some variations, as an example

cd /Applications
calibre --ignore-plugins

but none of them worked.
What is the exact series of line commands I have to write in my Terminal?

Just open a terminal on your mac, copy paste the following:

calibre-debug -g

should get something similar to this

$ calibre-debug -g

Not at a Mac at the moment but I think the following should work:

cd /Applications/calibre.app/Contents/MacOS
./calibre --ignore-plugins

Edit: Checked on my virtual Mac and the above seems to work. See attached images.

Click the Preferences menu entry in to macOS toolbar, in the menu that comes up there is a restart in debug mode entry. And if you wan tto run calibre from the command line on macos, you use

/Applications/calibre.app/Contents/MacOS/calibre --ignore-plugins
