Do you find your front lit Kindle losing brightness over time?
After a couple years, I've increased brightness of my voyage from 14 to 17 during the day. (It was already used when I bought it.)
Wonder if the Kindle is losing brightness. Hope it's not my eyes lol. Had my annual eye exam last year but not yet this year because of covid Last edited by Barty; 05-24-2020 at 03:02 PM. |

I cannot speak for Kindles, but my Kobo Aura H2O which is about 5 years 6 months old has not lost brightness from the LEDs for the font light.

I've used front lit Kindles since the first gen Paperwhite. I've never noticed the lights getting dim, even for 5+ year old devices.

I noticed that I had to increase brightness on all of my Kindles over the past year, but it turned out to be a fast-growing cataract in my right eye. Once I had the cataract removed in February, I was able to go back to my usual brightness level.

I keep my Kindles at brightness 10 or 11 since I have since my first Paperwhite. I still have that first one and it's as bright as ever.

LEDs will dim as they age
LEDs will dim over time in proportion to how long they've been used. This effect will be most obvious with the brighter LED lamps used for lighting rooms. Thus it is possible you are noticing some dimming, depending on how much you read each day.

Not only does lighting appear less bright but a cataract also changes color temperature, i.e., everything is a bit more yellowish over time, one just doesn't realize it. The difference pre/post surgery is nothing less than stunning.

The LED doesn't but the yellow phosphor coating to make it whitish wears with use. The light thus becomes a little dimmer and bluer.

LEDs do indeed degrade over time with decreasing light output. For the LEDs that use phosphors to produce other wavelengths, the phosphor degradation will dominate resulting in a shift to a bluer tint.
Other things affecting the output of an LED are the degradation of the epoxy coating, electromigration of atoms in the LED and its junction with the metal leads and thermal damage. |

I haven't noticed this issue myself.

It would take years and the effect is much less in low power "White" LEDs than the room light kind. The eye is more sensitive to hue changes than brightness, so on an LED back lit LCD like a laptop or TV on 8 hrs+ a day you notice the colour shift first. Most front light eink would be having the LEDs running lower power than the same size LCD as the LCD colour panels lose up to 4/5ths of the light.

I also have a first gen galaxy tab S, which is 6? yo. I've left the brightness slider still pretty much in the same place, around 30% daytime, though the OLED panel has definitely degraded and gotten yellower. So not sure what's up with the voyage |
