That isn't true for older Kindles, of course. But I think it's an excellent solution for the new models from Amazon actually. Better than the option to turn the device off.
And if you turn you Kobo off, the battery will last for many months as well. And it won't matter which model.

When we're talking about out of the box things one reader does and another doesn't, didn't Kindles only gain the ability to auto-hyphenate words in justified text with KFX? Or am I misremembering?

The basic layout of a book seems far more important to me than being able to zoom images. And ePub could hyphenate words for a long as I've owned a reader (2012?).

Of course, but it's faster to wake the Kindle up from hibernation (to check the battery, for example) than it is to turn on the Kobo.

The ability to hyphenate is a negative imho. I hate it and have to specifically disable it in all my Kobo epubs. Kindles just don't do it with azw3 out of the box, which is an asset, imho.

Surely you would agree the option to enable/disable it is better than having that decision made by poor layout?

It would be nice if there was a simple, one-click option to enable/disable it on the device. Fussing with css to do it is pretty annoying. Still, I can live with the status quo. Let 'em have their hyphens, as long as I can disable them.

With a Kobo (but also with any other ereader of course) You can do it with KOReader. It is incredible that a free and GPL software has many features that official engines of great corporations don't have.

But, again, preferences are very individual: I hate non hyphenated books. I can hardly bear the absence of ligatures but without hyphenation I won't read the book.

I've tried KOReader on several occasions. Since the vast majority of my ebooks are epub, it was cold pancakes and no honey.

As for hyphenation? I tend to reformat all my ebooks ragged right (aka left justified) so hyphenation is seldom a consideration. Now ligatures? Those I like to see. Typography nerds of the world unite, you have nothing to lose but your glyphs!

What is it about hyphenation you hate? Did you hate hyphenation when you read pBook before reading eBooks?

That is what I find really odd. People read pBooks and had no issue with things like full justification, hyphenation, indents, and no space between paragraphs and had no bother. Now with a Reader, all/some of that can be a bother. If it wasn't a bother before, why is it a bother now?

It's the conundrum of choice. If you have no choice, you don't think about it. If you have a choice about every little detail, some people fret about those details.

Exactly. And of course, people are different: some are fussier and some can't be bothered by minor details.

To me the problem with hyphenation in ebooks is how often it happens and that it happens in strange places. For paperbooks, good layout means there are relatively few split words. That's because, at least traditionally, someone inspects and tweaks it. In ebooks, it is automated and if the algorithm isn't right, words are split in the wrong place, and spacing can get too wide. A better hyphenation dictionary can help, and the algorithm does seem to have improved while I have been using ereaders, but I still prefer ragged-right on my ereaders.

Reading ePubs on my Nook, I rarely notice hyphenation. Not because it doesn't happen, but because it does a good enough job that the hyphenation isn't usually noticeable (words aren't split in distracting ways).

It's worse reading kepubs on my Kobo with Wolf's hyphenation dictionary. But I don't mean to insult that dictionary, because Kobo without it is worse. It rarely hyphenates words, causing weird spacing issues.

An eReader in Screensaver mode (aka sleep) uses no power except when you turn pages. So the only weak link is if the cpu or wifi is still processing.

How do you turn pages on your ereader while it is in sleep mode? And yes, it does still use some power—after all you have to allow for wakeup events whether they be from the Hall effect sensor, power button, real-time clock or whatever else may be used and the 32KHz wakeup clock itself.

If you are feeling up to boredom, you can check NXP's site for more information. I'd recommend AN12001: i.MX 6SLL PowerConsumptionMeasurement as a starting point.
