I didn't say it was technically difficult or involved long threads. The person to whom I replied considers the book cover screensaver as a "must have", there have been multiple instances here when users have expressed their conviction it's a "must not have". A nice example of the subjective, personal nature of the ereader experience. As I stated in my post.

I've found footnote work much better with ePub using firmware 4.20.14622.

The discussions were more from those people who do not want their current book cover as the sleep screen but didn't want a blank screen either. Displaying a random photo, displaying the owner's information just in case they lost your ereader and the person who finds it is honest enough to return it. Even one discussion where the OP wanted a slideshow while in sleep mode, never mind that this pretty defeats the whole purpose of sleep mode.

Admittedly, I tend to wonder about those who do not want their current book cover as the screensaver image. You don't want your co-workers to see that you are reading Tantric Tarts of Titan?

Or powering off the Kindle and letting the Kobo go to sleep and then comparing the startup times and location after power on/wake up as an alternative test.

If you happen to have a MacOSX or Windows PC, you could use the Kobo Desktop application to set up your Touch and install the newer firmware. See Manual reset your Kobo Touch on Kobo's help pages.

My old Touch is not happy with connecting reliably to my WiFi but considering the changes in WiFi technology since it's was built not all that surprising. The other issue is the factory firmware on the Touch does not support newer secure protocols and the older protocols are no longer supported by most web sites. On newer browsers, MobileRead is using TLS 1.3 for instance. Commercial sites must be using at least TLS 1.1 with TLS 1.2 strongly recommended the payment card industry group.
I was comparing like with like; when I shut down the Kindle (by hoding the power button for 5 seconds (I timed it), it still returns to the page I was reading with no noticeable delay (less than 1 second)

I do have access to a Windows PC - my wife has one as her only PC, and I have one lurking under a pedestal of my desk to use for things like updating my TomTom sat. nav. and other jobs where there isn't a Linux application available (e.g. the Kobo desktop app). I'll try the URL you suggested and report back.

I have a Kobo device in my closet. They didn't allow to zoom in to epub pictures if the epubs aren't specially created. The Kobo support wasn't interested in changing it. A function that works with the Kindle right away.

Additionally there are privacy concerns with Kobo devices. Privacy problems are for Kindles too so I am searching for a reading device without the privacy horror right now.

Any internet connected device has privacy concerns.

I don't know how much data Kobo sends back, but they definitely know what books get synced to your device from the Library and their bookstore.

On a Gen 2 Paperwhite, it takes about 11 seconds for the screen to blank and the device to power down (Amazon says 7-15 seconds). After the shutdown, I hit the power button and the image of the child and tree appears. About 2-3 seconds after that, the progress bar appears. It is not instantaneous. Heck, even if you hit restart on the cancel/restart/screen off, it's not instantaneous and that is the same boot process. And note that screen off is not power off.

Any explanations as to why you see "no noticeable delay" and I see the power on boot progress bar?

I think the key is that you're considering a Kindle Gen 2 Paperwhite, whereas my device is an old Kindle v4, with clicky keys for page turn, and the row of 5 keys (plus the 4-way rocker ring) on the fascia below the screen. Similarly, my Kobo is a Touch (N905) - both *very* old!

I'm pleased to say that when I followed the suggestion to do a manual reset (poking a paperclip into the small hole on the back) it let me go into the process of resyncing over the USB lead, reloaded my library and even woke up the WiFi . I've been able to access all 3 wireless access points in our house. Thank you for the pointer to that page on the Kobo website.

You cannot power off a Kindle. You can reboot or put it to sleep. So what you ae doing it using the power button to put your Kindle to sleep.

So your saying that your Kindle boots up as fast as you think it does is wrong because it's not booting up. It's waking from sleep.

You can power off a Kobo (yet another feature that helps make Kobo better) for when you are not planning on reading for a while. With a Kindle, you just leave it sleeping, put in away and if you don't use it in long enough time, you drain the battery. So if you where to keep the Kindle you have and buy a newer one, and keep the current Kindle as a spare, you would have to remember to keep charging it every so often so the battery doesn't go flat.

Why are you turning off the Kobo instead of putting it to sleep?

I went back a few years and found this thread: Kindle 4 - sleep or turn off. Basically, it agrees with what I was saying. You were turning off your Kobo and putting your Kindle to sleep and believing that is a fair comparison.
