Saddle up for mystery and adventure in the Old West with the first five books in the Holmes on the Range series:

Holmes on the Range ("Delightfully offbeat"-Entertainment Weekly)
On the Wrong Track ("Wonderfully entertaining"-Booklist)
The Black Dove ("Quirky and original"-The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)
The Crack in the Lens ("Excellent"-Publishers Weekly)
World's Greatest Sleuth! ("A hoot!"-The Washington Post)

It's 1893, and cowboy brothers Big Red and Old Red Amlingmeyer are roaming the West in search of work. What they keep finding instead are mysteries in need of solving. Good thing Old Red's been studying the "deducifyin'" methods of his hero, Sherlock Holmes. Now he's ready to try his hand at crime solving...with Big Red reluctantly dragged along for the ride.

The Long Lavender Look is the 12th in the Travis McGee series by John D. MacDonald. These go on sale very rarely in the US, are brutally expensive when not on sale, don't stay on sale very long, and I don't think I've yet seen a repeat. So, if you want it at $2.99 instead of $8.99 or up, grab it now.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008WOUMK4
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-long-lavender-look

Spoiler:
Quote:
"McGee has become part of our national fabric."

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER

A lovely young girl steps in front of Travis McGee's headlights. McGee misses the girl but lands in ten feet of swamp water. As he's limping along the deserted road, someone in an old truck takes a few shots at him. And, when he goes to the local sheriff to complain, the intrepid Travis McGee finds himself arrested and charged with murder. And he can't help but ask himself, is this what they call southern hospitality...?

Back Story is, per the blurb, the 30th in the Spenser series by Robert B. Parker. These go on sale a little more often than the Travis McGee books, but for most of them, not a whole lot more often. So again, grab it if you want it. It's $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OIZSJQ
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/back-story

Spoiler:
Quote:
In Robert B. Parker's most popular series, an unsolved thirty-year-old-murder draws the victim's daughter out of the shadows for overdue justice-and lures Spenser into his own past, old crimes, and dangerous lives.

Another rare price drop to something reasonable on an Open Road title in the UK...

Twenty Blue Devils is the ninth in the excellent IMO Gideon Oliver series by Aaron Elkins, and it has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK.

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00J84KR6G

Spoiler:
Quote:
The “shrewd, witty and self-deprecating forensic anthropologist” travels to Tahiti to sniff out crime at a coffee plantation (Publishers Weekly).

The dead man is the manager of Tahiti’s Paradise Coffee Plantation, producer of the most expensive coffee bean in the world, the winey, luscious Blue Devil. Nothing tangible points to foul play behind his fall from a cliff, but FBI agent John Lau, a relative of the coffee‑growing family, has his suspicions. What he needs is evidence, and who better to provide it than his friend, anthropologist Gideon Oliver, the Skeleton Detective? Gideon is willing to help, but surprisingly—and suspiciously—both the police and the other family members refuse to okay an exhumation order. As a result, Gideon, to his surprise and against his better judgment, finds himself sneaking into a graveyard under cover of night with John, a flashlight, and a shovel—not exactly up to the professional standards of the world’s most famous forensic anthropologist, but necessary under the circumstances.

Gideon prefers his bones ancient, dry, and dusty, but the body he must examine had lain in the tropical sun for a week before it was found and then buried native‑style—shallow, with no casket—so it is not exactly his . . . well, cup of tea. But it is not the state of the remains that bothers him the most, it is the deeper human ugliness that his examination uncovers: subtle clues that do indeed point to foul play, to mistaken identity, and to a murderous conspiracy that may have percolated through the family for decades—and brewed a taste for murder.

Reading through the good Dr's message, it wasn't the smile link that had problems. It was the second Amazon link to the Complete Blood in Oxford Mystery Series that may have contained an affiliate link:

I know I inadvertently post BookBub affiliate links from time-to-time, as I just copy the address and don't pay enough attention.

I've never been chided for a smile.amazon link.

To anyone who shops across the UK and US, this was originally published as "Rivers of London", so check if you already have it under that name.

I'd recommend this.

I've just had an eReaderIQ price alert for The Silkworm, the second book in the Cormoran Strike series by Robert Galbraith (JK Rowling).

Currently 99p at amazon.co.uk. Lowest price to date.

Quote:
When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, she just thinks he has gone off by himself for a few days - as he has done before - and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home.

But as Strike investigates, it becomes clear that there is more to Quine's disappearance than his wife realises. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows. If the novel were published it would ruin lives - so there are a lot of people who might want to silence him.

And when Quine is found brutally murdered in bizarre circumstances, it becomes a race against time to understand the motivation of a ruthless killer, a killer unlike any he has encountered before . . .

Into the Water by Paula Hawkins is $1.99 at Amazon US.

I read and enjoyed The Girl On The Train (do yourself a favor and avoid the awful movie), so I picked this one up.

The professional reviews for the new book seem to be good. But oh, those user reviews...

Quote:
A single mother turns up dead at the bottom of the river that runs through town. Earlier in the summer, a vulnerable teenage girl met the same fate. They are not the first women lost to these dark waters, but their deaths disturb the river and its history, dredging up secrets long submerged.

Left behind is a lonely fifteen-year-old girl. Parentless and friendless, she now finds herself in the care of her mother's sister, a fearful stranger who has been dragged back to the place she deliberately ran from—a place to which she vowed she'd never return.

With the same propulsive writing and acute understanding of human instincts that captivated millions of readers around the world in her explosive debut thriller, The Girl on the Train, Paula Hawkins delivers an urgent, twisting, deeply satisfying read that hinges on the deceptiveness of emotion and memory, as well as the devastating ways that the past can reach a long arm into the present.

Beware a calm surface—you never know what lies beneath.

I really liked the early Tom Clancy books, including Hunt for Red October and Red Storm Rising, before he started letting his politics bleed a lot into his books, as he did in some of his later titles. Red Storm Rising is probably my favorite of his books, to the extent that I've re-read it several times, which is rare for me with a "thriller". Although this reads more like an wargame-ish "history" of a possible WW III than a thriller...

Anyway, Red Storm Rising is on sale today for $2.99 as part of the US Kindle Dailly Deal, matched at Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Red-Storm-Ris...dp/B001QEAQQC/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/red-storm-rising

Spoiler:
Quote:
From the author of the Jack Ryan series comes an electrifying #1 New York Times bestseller—a standalone military thriller that envisions World War 3...

A chillingly authentic vision of modern war, Red Storm Rising is as powerful as it is ambitious. Using the latest advancements in military technology, the world's superpowers battle on land, sea, and air for ultimate global control. It is a story you will never forget. Hard-hitting. Suspenseful. And frighteningly real.

“Harrowing...tense...a chilling ring of truth.”—TIME
