I wrote to Kobo once and that was the reply I got from them. I think they just posted an automatic reply without actually reading what my problem was...

Out of curiosity, have you have looked at using calibre with the DeDRM plugin to see if it will remove the DRM making editing the ebooks easier.

Google Apprentice Alf and/or Apprentice Harper for more information on the topic.

Having followed your exact instructions, I was able to apply the patch. I really needed someone to take me by the hand and guide me through as you did, step by step, because with the instructions next to the patches I felt totally lost. I only dare to use Terminal when I have step by step instructions to copy and paste things, otherwise I am clueless about Terminal. I am a translator by profession and Terminal scripts are not my domain

So once again, I am deeply grateful for your help. I can finally read those library books in a way that is friendly for my eyes

I have tried that, but it didn't work on library books.

One question: will this patch solution stay in place after future firmware updates or updates through Kobo (through sync) or will I have to apply the corresponding patch each time and repeat these steps?

Sounds as if your library is using the hardened version of Adobe DRM. Sadly on Catalina, you are stuck since you can't run the 32 bit ADE 2.0.1.

If you are running Mojave or earlier, you can try installing ADE 2.0.1 ( see here for the Adobe download as long as they still allow it).

It will need to be reapplied after a firmware update since the files that are used will be overwritten.

Yeah, I think so too, because Biblos is owned by a publishing house, they also sell e-books within the same Biblos system.

Oh dear. I have read a number of complaints about Catalina and I am still using Mojave, it works perfectly, so why risk messing things ups. I usually skip a few versions of OS, major changes are introduced after every few versions anyway and I am not so keen on minor changes...

OK. So I just find the patch with the corresponding number and follow the same steps as for this patch?

Will save this topic as a pdf file on my computer, it is a real lifesaver.. or better, an eyesaver

Yes. The patch file are often updated within hours of the release of the new firmware version.

[QUOTE=MiuMiu;3989471]You might also want to look at making your patch selections in the kobopatch.yaml file. Using the overrides section there is easier than editing each of the individual .yaml files in the src directory. I've attached a blank sample for 4.20.14622 (everything is set to no) which I've simply copy and paste into the new patch set's kobopatch.yaml. I do check for new or removed patches to keep up to date but this carries over most of the patches I use without having to edit multiple files.

The major change for Catalina and the source of many issues is that Catalina no longer supports 32 bit applications. And there were a surprising number of applications that were still 32 bit. Much like unpleasant memories when one company I did some work for replaced most of their computers over a Christmas break with nice new computers running Windows 7 x64 and then found that they had several corporate apps that were GUI wrappers around a 16 bit code base. Can you say oh, crap!!

that claim is disingenuous
as I understand it, what the library lends me is a copy of the book from Kobo store, so if I bought it direct from Kobo it would be just as unreadable.

these must be something strange about how your ( non UK) library DRM works though, [ or your computer setup] because UK library books can be sorted with the regular tools & a windows PC. Unfortunately it can't be discussed in detail here, nor at the " tools" web site. Once you mention library books, there's an assumption that you are planning to steal..

Do you still have the reply? I can't see how a complaint about book formatting could have an automatic reply that it had been fixed and would have been considered a satisfactory reply. So, I'm curious to see what they said.

The book you borrow through the Kobo store is the same as the one you could buy. But, if you download the book through ADE, it might not be the same. I definitely have received versions for purchased books. And then had them updated to different versions again (mostly noticed because the cover changed). I've assumed that after the initial upload of the book to the two different servers (Kobo and whatever ADE accesses) they are maintained separately.
