@jgoguen: I would suggest using the calibre prints() function to print or alternately to check for bytes in the log object you are using and force them to unicode.

I'm getting an error when I try to connect my Kobo to Calibre(I'm using the Portable version, so I can have it in Dropbox). I get the following messenge:

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried the workaround for a unicode issue posted by Svens in message #1998 in this thread.

With Windows 10 1909, the location of the Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8 has changed a bit. See attached images.
