Why does calibre rename C.S. Lewis to C. S. Lewis?

When importing metadata from goodreads, https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/1069006.C_S_Lewis

(I happen to use the Quality Check PI: Fix: Format Author Initials to make all mine have spaces and periods. YMMV and the PI has settings to detect or fix to be consistent)

I would suspect the metadata embedded was that way, Not as shown.

From memory, it is hardcoded in the metadata download to use separate the initials if dots are used. I know I have discussed it here before and I think Kovid said that.

Its not hardcoded, IIRC individual plugins can override the cleanup processing if they prefer.

Not without a bit of work. And it would mean that the plugin produced a value that was inconsistent with the other plugins. Wouldn't that break the matching that the download metadata does for the results from different sites?

I think I suggested before that a tweak to choose the formatting of the initials would be a good idea. But, we both agreed it wasn't worth the effort. And personally, I haven't a clue as to which version is the correct version. "C.S." or "C. S."? Or maybe the dots should be stripped out. I'm sure I've seen all of them on covers of books
