For me, these Filter-Lists are helpful, but I sometimes want to read on a whim some particular subject. That's when I'd like to a stroll through my Collections. So for me, the more Collections I have, the more interesting. It seems you all are saying that I'm using it the wrong way. It seems this is because of the slowness of Collections. Maybe in a future generation of ereaders, when ereaders are as snappy as today's smartphones, you all won't discourage me from using Collections the way I do.

Perhaps you should fine tune your collections even more and end up with more collections than you have books. And I don't think it's due to the slowness of collections which has been speeded up in newer firmware, it's due to the slowness of scrolling through page after page of collections.

I do use a calibre generated catalog which includes authors, titles, series, publisher, publication date and descriptions which I export as an epub and import to my ereaders. I open that "book" and do a search for say, 3560 if I am looking for books about Cisco 3560 switches.

Right click on a book, click on Convert books, click on Create a catalog of the books in your calibre library. Set the options, click ok and wait a bit.

You know, I'd love to create a list of, say, top 20 books I should be reading in order of priority.
In the series column, put in a series of Top 20 Books and number them in the order you want them to be. Then you can find them in the series tab under Top 20 Books. It's that easy.

Thanks, JSWolf. Is there a way to keep this Top20Books series pinned to my Home screen, to remind myself, that, amidst the distraction of a thousand other books, I should read these top 20 first.?

There is no way to pin a specific series or collection to the home screen. I don't know the logic as to what collections get added to the home screen.

That both is and isn't what I meant. I'd like other filters. Such as in the Series tab, only show series with more than one book. Or with unread books. Or use a name filter. Those would be useful in the collection list as well.

Of course the thing I'd really like to be able to do is combine the existing filters. It would be good to use the reading state filters (Reading, Unread, Finished) with the source filters (Imported, Purchased, Overdrive, etc.).

Whether you are using Collections the wrong way is up to you. @DNSB doesn't find them that useful. I have a smallish set of collections that I do find useful. I have tried tags, genre and some other combinations at different times, and they didn't work for me. Either I end up with a lot of collections with a few books in each, or fewer collections with a lot of books in each. The latter works better for me, but, in some ways, it ends up being the same as browsing through the main library.

The collections I have tend to be more task oriented. I have a "Test samples" collection for all the books I create or get for testing things on the device. And about a third of them were created to test something (and I need to clean up more often). I have collections created from my book source (where I bought the book). They are mainly to have the "Kobo" collection. That has all the books I have purchased from Kobo and is basically the same as the "Purchased" filter. But, with this collection I can use the other filters and only see the unread when looking for a book.
