Sounds like the complaint from one of my grand-nieces: "Where have all the boys gone?" Most of the new YA fantasy she loves reading features female main characters with males as relatively minor characters. Admittedly, she also talked her parents into paying to stream the SuperM Beyond the Future concert so she may not have an unbiased viewpoint on gender balance.

I mostly read fantasy and have noticed that a significant majority of the books have female main characters. Even though a significant majorty of the books are written by women, the author's gender doesn't seem to matter; the men also more often have a female main character. What bothers me is when they have women in unrealistic roles; twice now I've seen women blacksmiths.

But that's not unrealistic. Women have been blacksmiths for centuries, with the earliest documentation of it dating back 800 years.

The muscles needed for blacksmithing develop with use, men don't start out being able to do it perfectly either. It's also possible to use a smaller hammer but do more blows if the blacksmith doesn't have the muscle mass yet for larger hammers.

...what bothered me was when the half-orc mage had to replace his battle unicorn's mithril shoes with adamantium ones, the blacksmith... was female! Come on! That totally broke my sense of immersion.
