There's a chance it would work if you can go back and restore your Kindle folder and Alf prefs from when it was working, but getting a second Kindle would be easier and more reliable, since K4Mac could break again at any time.

I've been leaning towards that.

Should I get a 4th generation or higher (is there a FAQ on this)? I want to make sure to get one that grabs the best format.

My recommendation would be a 1st generation Paperwhite or earlier (eg; Keyboard or Touch). The firmware on these devices does not currently handle kfx at all.

I got a refurbished Touch a while ago in case of other methods breaking down. It handles AZW3 (KF8), but not KFX. I think the Keyboard is MOBI and not KF8 and definitely not KFX.

The Kindle Keyboard 3 (i.e. not the Kindle 1 or Kindle 2) does handle AZW3 when updated with the latest firmware. But not KFX, as you say.

Hey guys. Tried searching the thread and didn't see anything so I wanted to ask. I'm currently on Kindle v. 1.23.1 for Mac. Back in the day before the new Calibre tool I disabled the render-test to continue downloading files in azw format. Is there a way to revert the Kindle app back so that it downloads kfx files again instead of azw?

Run the chmod command again, but replace -x with +x

Thanks. Attempted that; it didn't work. I tried reinstalling the app and it's still downloading azw. Weird.

I've installed Calibre on my PC, setting my device as "Kindle Emulator." And it says the first step is to "add books," but where are they? The file called "My Kindle Content" contains exactly one book. (It's in the wrong format, but we'll cross that bridge when we've crossed the ones before.) Where does the PC keep my Kindle books if not there?

Are you sure you installed calibre? Where did you see a device "Kindle Emulator"? Do you have Kindle for PC installed? You will need that to download your ebooks from Amazon before they will show in it's My Kindle Content directory.

I've attached an image of the Welcome wizard's device selection. No Kindle Emulator to be seen.

Are you sure the AZW files aren't KFX? With Kindle for Mac/PC, AZW is a generic extension for any Kindle format main book file...AZW3, MOBI, KFX, etc.

Thank you so much for your detailed instructions. I downloaded the 17 version kindle even though I was currently using the 19 and added the command prompt and "Kaboom!" a book which insisted on downloading as KFX zip came in as AZW3 and I was able to convert it.

For a long while I used jhowell's Method One in macOS 10.14.6
Reverting to macOS-Kindle version 1.17.1 has helped me download books bought from Amazon, and I had no further problems. Now I use Calibre 4.16.0

I bought, however, a few day ago, a new MacBookPro and, as part of the greater liberties Apple grants now to its users, I cannot downgrade the macOS anymore.

In macOS AppStore, the reviews for the latest version 1.28 of Kindle for Mac say that Amazon does its best to make its macOS application really useless.

Is the action list below still the correct on for me?

(1) Quit macOS-Kindle
(2) Write command
chmod -x /Applications/Kindle.app/Contents/MacOS/renderer-test
or
sudo chmod -x /Applications/Kindle.app/Contents/MacOS/renderer-test
in Terminal
(3) Totally empty the folder:
~/Library/Application Support/Kindle/My Kindle Content
(I have many hundreds of books, and I do not know which format each of them has)
(4) Open macAppStore and download version 1.28
(5) Overwrite the Kindle version 1.17.1
(6) Start Kindle 1.28
(7) Download again all books in Kindle 1.28 with
File → Download
